Ghost Mike

Hardcore animation enthusiast chilling away in this dimension and unbothered by his non-corporeal form. Also likes pastel cartoon ponies. They do that to people. And ghosts.

Ghost Mike's Ponyfic Review Monday Musings #110

Anniversaries of media or pieces of tech abound all over the place these days to the point they can often mean less if you yourself don’t have an association with it. That said, what with me casually checking in to Nintendo Life semi-frequently, I couldn’t have missed that yesterday was the 35th anniversary of a certain Game Boy. A family of gaming devices that’s a forerunner for the

Ghost Mike's Ponyfic Review Monday Musings #109

I don’t know about America, but the price of travelling is going up more and more here. Just got booked in for UK PonyCon in October, nearly six whole months ahead, yet the hotel (same as last year) wasn’t even £10 less despite getting there two months earlier. Not even offsetting the £8 increase in ticket price. Then there’s the flights and if train prices will be different by then… yep, the

Been several themed weeks lately, between my handmittpicked quintet for Monday Musings’ second anniversary, a Scootaloo week, and a

Ghost Mike's Ponyfic Review Monday Musings #107

Been a while since an Author Spotlight here, hasn’t it? Well, actually, once every three months strikes me as a reasonable duration between them – not too long that they feel like a false promise, but infrequent enough that you can be sure it’s a justified one. And that certainly applies to this author, a late joiner to Fimfic but one who’s posted very frequently since and delivered a lot of

Ghost Mike's Ponyfic Review Monday Musings #106

In Monday Musings’ early days, if I was lacking in a suitable blurb opener, I would often reach for whatever I’d been watching or playing lately. I kind of retired that after a while, mostly because they tended to not be what my regular readers are interested in, and largely only elicited shrugs of the “I don’t care for it” variety. Well, this time, it’s too dear to me to hesitate: on Friday, I

Cartoon Karma - My Little Pony: The Movie - Part 1 & 2 · 8:59pm Nov 5th, 2018

I run a YouTube channel, which is how I became a Pony fan in the first place, introduced to the Movie through reviewing it last year. Today, I've debuted my first proper My Little Pony video. And as a tribute, it's on the Movie, my introduction to Pony.

It's also my first two-parter; there was just no way to do this all in one video without it being too much. The videos are split solely to allow for a breathing break, with the content itself basically unaffected.

As it happens, the two episodes together are EXACTLY the length of two episodes of Friendship Is Magic, at 44 minutes and 10 seconds.

If you're unaware, 'Cartoon Karma' videos are basically video essays on any given film, done through a mixture of thoughtful points, gut reactions, goof that have to be noted, and other types of points as is fit, all done through a compound scoring system. But without a trace of cynicism. Watch and judge for yourself. I personally caption all videos myself too, so there's that.

I've spend too long working on these. Two weeks editing them in the evenings, not to mention the lengthy on-off scripting process before that. The Ponies have come to affect me in a profound way, and as my introduction to them, I felt I had to do this Movie justice.

Do I plan to do other Pony videos after this? In a word: yes. I'm trying to branch beyond these normal 'Cartoon Karma' videos into things that may broaden both my audience and my technique, without being beholden to a specific format. Before Season 9 Premieres (likely next March/April) I plan to do a thorough analysis on Season 8, what worked and what didn't, why, it's place in MLP, and more on that topic. Giving me time to live with it while working on it gradually to produce something worthwhile.
Beyond that? Early to say, but I can see myself doing a Pony video semi-frequently. Maybe my top episodes of the show as it is ending? We'll see. But no animation has personally affected me as much as MLP since Wreck-It Ralph, and dwindling though the Pony fandom may be, it still has a sizeable audience, and one I'd love to share my own brand of content with.

Well, right now I'm not sure how many people other than me read these things. I'll give this a plug on the blog in a few days, though. (Once I've watched them myself and so can let people know what to expect.) I'm not usually someone who's into long analysis videos -- I much prefer to read, part of the reason I'm here on Fimfiction -- but I'm going to make an exception here.

Lol, yeah, probably no one sees them right now but yourself. I’ll probably post about them again at a later date when I have some more followers.

No obligation, mate. If analysis videos aren’t your thing, then they’re not your thing. Though if they are to your liking and you do post about them, that’d be wonderful. I wouldn’t say no! :pinkiehappy: At the very least, I’d be curious to know what you think both in terms of execution and the points I make.

Although, if you’d rather read them instead, you can! When watching YouTube videos on a computer, you can click on the options bar (the triple dot one) by the video description, and open Transcript, to read the Subtitles I personally wrote and synced (just make sure you choose English and not the auto-generated English). While you will miss the accompanying clips that enhance the video, everything aural is there, both what I say and the character dialogue. At the very least, I recommend subtitles if you watch the videos; they can be fast-paced at times, and they’re very accurate, done manually and all.
