Episode reviews: Uprooted/ Between Dark and Dawn/ A Trivial Pursuit

Okay, quick talk about three episodes. I know I haven't been doing these weekly but I am behind on mlp. Season 8 wasn't... as good as I would have hoped so I stopped keeping track each week. My bad. Season 9, from what I've seen, has picked up the slack. So there's some positive. I'm going to try and watch at least 2 or 3 episodes a day until I get caught up. Don't worry, I'll be ready for the

Episode Review: Father Knows Best/School Raze

    1: Father Knows Best

Well this is it folks. I have finally finished season 8.... I think it's my least favorite season. Not entirely bad, but just not as good as others. I'm surprised really. I never thought I'd see a day I'd like a season less then season 4 but here it is. So let's start off by going over the last two episodes of this season shall we?

New Chapter coming soon (The Greatest Treasure/Fate Pony)

Heyo everyone. It seems I've got my writing mojo back. Well now I've finally started the next chapter of TGT and my Fate pony fic. They should be done by the weekend if not tomorrow. I hope it'll be worth the wait.

    (Spoiler review) What Lies Beneath

Still need to catch up on season 8. Don't worry. I won't be out of the loop once season 9 ends. I plan on binging the show until then. So hopefully I'll get a review done a day. So let's start with this one.

{Episode Spoilers} Yakity-Sax · 8:09am Oct 15th, 2018

You know, I really hate the out of order and completely skewed time frame that these episodes have come out. So much so that I have only seen three episodes since episode 13: 'Yakity-Sax' 'Sounds of Silence' and 'A Rockhoof and a Hard Place'. I really need to watch the rest and I probably will binge watch them but as of now, I think I'll try and give each episode a little blog that I have seen. I'm sorry, it's just I've been sort of out of pony for a while due to stress and not really caring for this season overall.

So let's get down to this episode. The episode I honestly did watch several weeks ago, wrote a blog, and decided to delete it. Why did I delete it? Because it was honestly incredibly written on dislike to the point I thought it was scathing. I decided not to post it because I honestly think I was letting my life frustration and not much care for this season affect my opinion of this episode. I needed time to think.

Do I like it now? No, but I don't hate it like I did when I first watched it.

Yakity-Sax is about Pinkie coming to love a yak instrument. That alone is honestly interesting. It's pretty much shown that Pinkie Pie is the only pony who has shown interest in the yak culture, wants to know and enact more of it because she enjoys it, and is basically the only real competent yak diplomat to be honest. It's comedic but also heartwarming to see how Pinkie effects the world in a positive light. So learning she would come to love something more on the yak culture really did catch my interest.

But the thing is... she sucks at the instrument. Now you may be thinking, 'she's just started'. That is true. Pinkie Pie however has been shown a master of instruments before hand, but again those were Equestrian instruments. At least there is a reason she wouldn't be that good at first, unlike in 'Fake it Till you Make it' where the writers completely forget about Fluttershy's ability to knit and make dresses for a joke or something.

But the thing that gets me is how Pinkie is acting. Pinkie in this episode is acting like Pinkie would... In season 1. She is not acting like she would in season 5. Not season 6. Not season 7. Season bloody 1 Pinkie. Don't get me wrong. I don't hate season 1 Pinkie. She was still pretty cute and funny but if she always acted like season 1 Pinkie she wouldn't be my second favorite character. For you see, Pinkie Pie in this episode seems to not understand her limits and boundaries about her friends.

She literally goes to Fluttershy's cottage at night to play. Fluttershy's cottage, mind you, that she actively uses to treat sick and young animals and houses a bunch more. Not to mention. MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT! Not to mention messing with the rest of her friends.

So Pinkie is 'surprised' that ponies are avoiding her... Okay, Pinkie is not oblivious to other people. She's gotten past that and learnt that lesson before. She's grown. What this episode has done is made Pinkie the unintentional antagonist because she is acting against the other characters. She is becoming unlikable and I don't like it.

So the gang decide to talk to Pinkie and say that she shouldn't play the instrument anymore. Now while they word it wrong, they have the best intentions and it isn't the end of the world...

Except Pinkie overblows the problem.

Now, do I hate this? No. I don't hate it because Pinkie tends to overreact to situations and use her emotions rather then logic to dictate what she will due in a situation. The problem I really have here is the scope of her depression. The scope that makes her so depressed that she just goes about her day... unintentionally kill plants and making other ponies miserable. Now I just want her to stop because she's ruining the days of others. There's making me feel sympathetic and then there's making me just want it to end.

So then Pinkie decides to leave for the yak country to learn more about the instrument........ why she didn't do that beforehand, I dunno. But she moves completely because... she really likes that instrument... I know Pinkie gets attached to things really quickly, but this is pushing it.

Then the gang run to catch her, admit they are wrong... which they aren't really but it was just a bit of wrong wording, and Pinkie performs and sucks. But the yaks like it because of her passion...

I don't know what to feel about this episode. I don't know whether to seeth or just feel like this episode was pointless. It was good to see more yak culture, but to me it seems that yak based episodes are a mixed bag. Maybe the yaks just aren't that good, but I did like the previous season's yak episode personally and I even liked the first yak episode. This one?

It didn't capture the spirit of who Pinkie is and more captured what she once was. I again state I do not care for the mindset that 'season 1 was better' or the early seasons were. Let me tell you what, having seen the character progression of these characters over the years, it is sometimes uncomfortable to watch the early seasons before their growth as they aren't as fleshed out and can be aggravating. There are still a number of good episodes among them and I stand by that there are good things in most every episode in the entirety of the series.

Like I'll go over the positives here. I do like Pinkie Pie's enthusiasm for yak culture. I do like the exploration of more yak culture. I do admit obsession is a part of her character and overreacting with her feelings is another. Pinkie's friends attempt to cheer her up were heartwarming and sweet and the message, while garbled, is alright.

It's just that it seems to flanderize Pinkie, or at least have it where Pinkie doesn't at all see the problem and harm she's causing others which is something a writer must never do with characters like her. I've seen people attack Pinkie's character or at least dislike her and I disagree with their statements. Pinkie Pie is at heart a good pony who wants to make everyone happy.

She is the bleeding Shirou Emiya of parties. That is her mission in life. To make everyone happy. TO make everyone smile and if she can't do that, she doesn't have a purpose in her mind. It's her life mission.

Seeing her blow off other ponies for her own gain is not something that Pinkie would do so blatantly. You know what would have fixed this? What really would have fixed this? Have the episode start off in Yakyakistan. Have some yaks call her out on her bad playing. That would have effected her as she would have disappointed the yaks she worked so hard to get to know. Return to Ponyville where she mopes about, not because she can't play, but because she disappointed and possibly ruined her connections because of her bad playing. And don't have her mope to that extent. Have her try to be happy and cheerful but it's obvious it got to her.

Have her friends help Pinkie with her playing, notice it isn't helping but then suggest going to the yaks. Rutherford is stubborn again in his dislike of her playing but then have the yak teacher comment that she adores Pinkie's enthusiasm and how much she seems to love yak culture. Have Rutherford apologize and you get around the same message.

My idea isn't perfect but it wouldn't have Pinkie be so effected and still try to make others happy even when she's miserable.

Long story short, it's a meh episode that doesn't really capture who is Pinkie Pie. I honestly hope you guys and gals enjoyed it more then I did.
Until next time. Thankfully I did enjoy the other two episodes I've seen thus far so those reviews should be more positive. Take care all.
