The things you learn · 11:33am Oct 2nd, 2018

There’s a site I like to look at when I want to learn the meaning of names so I can know a bit more. I like to know the meaning behind names, whenever possible, something I think more people should try. All too often I see characters with names that sound interesting then go and look them up and find the meaning of the character’s name has too much disconnect with the character themself. I know it sounds a little nitpicky, but that’s just how I am. Sometimes there are really great names from cultures that don’t get a whole lot of focus in popular media. Case and point, Gazsi is a Hungarian name that I think sounds really cool, but its elevated to even greater heights when you realize it means “King of the Treasure” and that just gets my Roleplayer brain abuzz with possibilities. At least that’s what I’m told its meaning is according to this site that gives names and their meanings I found a while back

You mean like Final Fantasy VII's Sephiroth is based off of Sephirot, one of the physical forms of God in Christian mythology?

possibly. In all likelihood, it’s just his name that was inspired by all that and they just wanted to have an incredibly overpowered final boss.

A lot of Sephiroth is based on Christian mythology. His name, his various other forms and more.

Factor in that he started as a good guy, I think they chose his name, powers and forms as a sort of end-game ally, then made him the final boss as a later decision.

You’re probably right, but without the official game development notes, it’s impossible to say for sure. Often times the development notes will contain content that was altered or dropped from the final product
