Starlight vs Varian (SPOILERS FOR TANGLED THE SERIES) · 1:34am Sep 5th, 2018
I was watching the Tangled series episode "Queen For A Day" on YouTube, and on a whim I checked the comments section. And one of them said, "Oh great. Another Starlight."
And I realized that they were right.
The writers and most fans of the show like to portray Varian as this tragic character, but he's not. He's a whiny selfish brat, who just like Starlight, rushes into things without any sort of forethought, and blames everyone and everything for his own problems.
The only thing that makes Varian slightly better than Starlight, is that he actually has to suffer the consequences of his actions.
He messes around with the black rocks when he was told repeatedly not to? His father gets frozen in amber.
He rushes into the castle and demands that Rapunzel drop everything during a crisis, with her parents missing, no less, to help him clean up his mess, without any idea as to how she's supposed to do that? He gets thrown out.
He commits high treason and tries to murder Rapunzel's loved ones? He gets thrown in prison.
There's speculation that there will be redemption arc for Varian, and all I have to say on that is, I hope they don't make the same mistakes that the MLP staff made with Starlight.
Don't have Rapunzel make some bullshit speech about friendship, have Varian immediately become a good guy, and then spend the rest of his time on-screen feeling sorry for himself.
No. I want Varian to actually be called out on his bullshit. I want Varian to earn the trust and respect of the main characters. And I want him to actually learn from his past mistakes, and grow as a person.
hattafan out
I like varian, to me the fact that he was an impulsive young genius whose ideas unintentionally had dangerous consequences did lead to his villainy driven by impulsive behaviour
I agree that if he has a redemption arc then it should be better handled, like have his father be the one to call him out
Plus at first I assumed was just an ally new character for this show and I found it genuinely a shock to have him turn bad
