A Celestia episode? At this time of the year? At this type of fandom? In this show? Localized entirely within this season?
Hasbro: Yes.
May I see it?
Hasbro:... yes.
Okay, I have to be clearly honest with everyone, I've been waiting so long for a Celestia episode. Oh yes, she's had two strong appearances last season and I loved both of them. They've been doing a better job of managing her character these last few seasons then they did through season 2's finale trough season 4. I'm just glad we got an episode that focused more so on her then any other leading character. Oh yeah, Twilight was also a main focus but that's a given in this show. If it isn't the main six, Spike, of the CMC, they are secondary characters.
This episode did a good job of showcasing to us a side of Celestia that we hadn't known before. As well, we now know that Celestia rose the sun for the first time around 1111 years ago. Of course, she is probably quite older then that since that's just when she rose the sun. Still, that's good that we know a little more of the lore there.
I'm not going to do a run down of the episode because while I did love it, I don't have anything major to say that really goes with that format. The rest of the main six were well written which is saying something. Not to bash on the writers, but 9 times out of 10 when the main six are together, a number of them are flanderized or pushed to the side just for Twilight's sake. I'm really glad the writer here was able to balance out everyone and make it feel that everyone got to contribute.
Spike and AJ were especially good here since they acted as snarky moral compasses to Twilight. Speaking of Twilight, her blind worship of Celestia sort of resurfaced again. While this was a trait that greatly annoyed me with her in the early seasons, the writer was actually able to pull it off in a way that was both understandable and likable even if it was a bit of lying on Twilight's part. Well not exactly lying but more of trying to fix it without telling anyone. Still blew up in her face though in a really heartwrenching scene that led to a golden heart to heart between her and Celestia.
You know, that's the thing with Twilight and Celestia. We don't really get to see them really talking that often. At least they didn't really in the early seasons. What I mean by that is that Twilight used to push Celestia way emotionally to focus on her status and putting her on a pedestal. She's never really seemed like she just wanted to view her as just another pony. While she technically isn't, Celestia does want everyone to treat her the same as they would treat others and Twilight is closer to her then anyone else. ALthough, this feeling was more one sided but going into this episode, it does feel like Twilight is really starting to see Celestia as someone on her level instead of above her and I really love that fact.
Starlight didn't get a lot to do here, but she was a blast. Her snarky comments to Twilight are always a treasure and it was good to see her try and comfort Fluttershy. Again, out of the main six, she only really seems to connect and talk to PInkie or Twilight so hopefully we'll get to see her bond with the others soon enough.
Celestia however was the star of the show. She stole every scene she was in as we learned how terrible she is as an actor. As well get to hear how much she loves theater and how her friends as a young one got her in on it. Sad to think that she's lost them with time, but that's what makes her honest smile and enthusiasm all the more heartwarming. This is just a cute and adorable side to her that I never thought we would get and I'm glad we got it.
Overall, a really great episode. One of my favorites of the show. I hope you all enjoyed it as well. Until next episode, see you.
It was a great episode. Glim-glam being all "you're not a princess princess" and that look on Celestia's face where she calls out Twilight for lying to her and Twilight does the formal bow, you can tell that bow wounded Celestia more than if Twilight had just stabbed her.
I loved this episode.
