Reviewing the Movie · 3:20am Dec 15th, 2017

I know it's a little late, but I figured it was time I let my opinion of the movie be known, especially since there's no risk of spoilers after so long.

For starters, the new animation style, while it took a little time to get used to, was really great. It allowed for far more sophisticated visuals than the show's flash animation. And it made all the new locations look incredible.

The music was terrific. My personal favorites are "We Got This Together", "One Small Thing", Open Up Your Eyes", and "Rainbow".

As for the characters, I found Tempest Shadow to be the most interesting. She was a fierce, powerful foe, with a sympathetic back story, a great song (as I've mentioned above), and I thought her redemption worked quite well. I'm hoping she appears in some capacity in season 8 and the comics, or we get a sequel to the movie which fleshes out her character even more.

The Storm King and Grubber weren't nearly as interesting, though both had their funny moments.

Capper was very smooth, and Captain Celaeno and her crew were cool (even if some of them didn't get much focus).

Princess Skystar was an adorable bundle of energy, and a great fighter (in fact, she's my second favorite character from the movie), but I wasn't a fan of Queen Novo's refusing to help the Mane Six.

And Songbird Serenade was fun for the brief time she was on screen.

I felt the story itself was pretty good. Admittedly, it did seem rushed in parts, but it all came together nicely in the end. And all the cameos and references to the series were fun to watch out for.

There were plenty of gripping scenes, but the one where Twilight finally blows up at her friends was really emotional. Andrea Libman did a great job voicing Pinkie there. And their reconciliation and teamwork in reclaiming the staff was a marvelous scene.

While the movie wasn't exactly what I expected, it was still an excellent showing. I'm really hoping we eventually get to see a sequel.

What, did you not like Capper's song?

I agree with Princess Skystar being adorable (yes, too) and I also agree that Queen Novo refusing to help the Six was also a bad move on her part, especially given the events that happen afterward confirming that if she tried to help maybe the whole business would be over much sooner.

Songbird Serenade actually got me to like Sia, whereas before I was more or less uninterested in her (except for "Cheap Thrills" which is really catchy). As for the animation, I agree that it looks fantastic. I've never seen a color party that nicely done.

The main beef I had with Tempest was that she was responsible for taking three of the show's supposedly most powerful characters out of commision with little opposition, which ticks me off as I hated seeing them getting worfed like that (they could have played more of a role in the story, but nooooo, someone had to give them a plot-mandated incompetence ball!) .
Otherwise, she's just fine; If I can tolerate Starlight (who is arguably less symphatetic) turning good, I certainly can tolerate Tempest better. It helps that her seriousness creates funny sometimes and I find it hard to not laugh with her "really?" expression on her face most of the time.

Speaking of funny, Rarity checking out her hair (and herself by extension) on a falling mirror, while freefalling, had everyone in the cinema watching crack up. Yes, Rarity, ponies know you're hot, but can you please get your priorities straight? :rainbowlaugh:

Just my lenghty, semi-non-sequitur 2 cents.

Having not seen the movie (but seen the pics and read about it enough to know the story), I think it was serviceable.

I certainly liked all the characters and world-building it did, and it certainly gave me ideas for future stories.

It's okay. Just not one of my favorites.

Yes, I was a little baffled at how little screen time Songbird Serenade got.

I just don't think it's as catchy and/or emotional as the other songs I mentioned.

I disagree with you to an extent as I found the song incredibly catchy and very easy to get into. While I do agree that it's not emotional, I don't think it's supposed to be. It supposed to be a deceptive/misleading song. It makes you think that Capper has good intentions, but you know that he has underlying motivations that aren't revealed until the very end. It's as Lily Peet puts it, "if 'Friend Like Me' were sung by Jafar."

Skystar was so freaking cute she is my favorite but i also liked the rest including capper, the voice acting was great but the best one has to be Emily Blunt as Tempest Shadow, she totally nailed it the performance, i was disapointed of how little screen time the storm king get, but at least when he appears he totally delivered, and I loved Lukas Graham song "Off to see the world"

In the end it was a pretty good movie, not oscar worthy but very enjoyable
