I just saw the My Little Pony Movie (warning: spoilers)... · 2:16am Oct 8th, 2017

Today I did something new.

Instead of my usual Saturday routine of "loaf around the house while looking up porn art on Derpibooru", I went to the movies with some friends from my MLP meetup group. Specifically, the My Little Pony movie.

How was it, you ask? Was it great? Was it good? Was it so bad that it made The Emoji Movielook like Citizen Kane?

Well, if I were to give it a rating between one and ten...I'd give it a solid...NINE.

The MLP Movie, while not perfect by any means, is a pretty damn good movie. The animation, while a bit jarring at first, is very colorful, very vibrant. The new characters are all likable. and the music isn't half bad either.

But perhaps the best part, or at least, what I thought was the best part, was Tempest Shadow. This mare starts out as a cold, heartless villain in the same vein as Darth Vader, beyond any hope of redemption. But, as the movie progresses, you start to sympathize with her; sure, she's a traitor to all ponykind, but she's not doing it because she's evil; she's doing it because she wants to be whole again. The Storm King knows this; it's his carrot on a stick. If she helps give him unlimited magical powers, then he'll restore her horn. And in the end, when she's predictably betrayed by the Storm King, she uses his own petrification spell to turn herself, and him, to stone. Just like Sunset Shimmer before her, she's learned the power of friendship and become a hero.

Of course, this movie has its flaws: the pacing is a bit too fast for my taste, and the Storm King himself is a bit too goofy for me, but aside from that, it's an excellent movie, the second best I've seen all year.

The first best was Dunkirk. Seriously, that movie is great.

And now, some music

The pacing did zip along, and there were a lot of in-your-face character faces, but that's probably because it was created for the short-attention-span youngsters, and to hit DVD sales where they expect most of the money to be made.

I think they did miss the mark with the Storm King, he could have been a great (greater?) Corporate CEO stereotype. The skypirates could have also not only been shipping Stormkingtm stuff but shipping counterfeit Stormkingtm stuff. When he gets hold of Twilight, he could have said, "Oh, you'd make a great toy!"

Still, great movie, I loved it.

...and then the poking at the plot happened afterwards, heh...

While it's supposed to go between Seasons 7 and 8, I wonder what happened to everyone else in the world. We know it's far bigger than just Canterlot and Ponyville. First question that came up was; where's Discord? Isn't he really really protective of Fluttershy? (At least we hope he is) Sure, the writers could have explained his absence by having Discord pop up at the end asking, "What'd I miss?" Then we started wondering, where were the changelings? They could have replaced half the guards besides come up with an alternative to the, er, Trojan Cake (heh!). The Gryphons? Saddle Arabians? Zebracans? Didn't ponies just make friends with the dragons, like Spike's personal friend Dragon Empress Ember? You'd only need one to show up and kick the Stormking out, Ember's dad, Torch who's almost as big as Canterlot itself. Why forget about all them and head for some race we never heard of until now? And how are aquatic hippogriffs going to work in Canterlot? It'd be a little dark for a PG rating to use the Pearl and turn all the Stormking army into fish and watch them suffocate on land. Speaking of dark, I know you caught the scene when Spike was used as a flamethrower. Sure it was shot from far overhead but one guy was completely on fire. Pretty sure he's dead or gonna die from 3rd degree burns over all his body. Either that or he'll get dragon mailed to the throne room next to Stoned-lestia.
