I was talking with Latreas earlier today when he sent me the following message.
ever thought of writing a story of the Mecha 6 meeting you?
While that would be interesting concept I thought that it would also work with Sonic and Tails (and Knuckles) as protagonists as well. Because of this, a two part Sonic spin-off of CMI will be made in the future. One will be a published work with Sonic and Tails acting alongside Lucky Ness as protagonists, and the other will (probably at first) be an unpublished, possibly password protected side storyline for Knuckles that will be linked at the end of the Sonic and Tails story. The reason behind this will be that the stories behave similarly to Sonic 3 and Knuckles, with one story "locking on" to the other (I even plan to reference that in the Author Notes by saying that you have locked the story onto a copy of Sonic and Knuckles).
