BronyCon 2013 – Part 2
By: Matthew S. Palumbo / Yosh E. O’Ducky

To say the first day was a real eye opener would be an understatement. This is because, quite literally, three key events happened that are relatable to one, like myself, who was losing the last of their eyesight.

The first came in the form of compassion while waiting in the pre-register line at the Hilton. While there a member of BronyCon staff asked if we could use some help checking in. I accepted and we were quickly educated on how those with special needs were allowed additional assistance in getting to and from places. This would normally feel quite condescending. However, for the duration of the convention, I found my status as a nearly blind individual to be, for lack of a better word, “Welcomed”.

An event I was eager to attend was the panel held by the makers of “Friendship Is Witchcraft”. They were debuting their latest episode at BronyCon and my son and I were excited to see it. However we were in for a big surprise when the latest installment in the series poked fun at blindness. What rubbed further salt in my mental wound was how they parodied “Snowdrop” while making blindness seem like a punishment. It goes without saying my son and I walked out long before the panel ended.

Fortunately the bite of the latest “Friendship is Witchcraft” episode was soon drowned out by the Silly Filly Studios panel later that day. Silly Filly Studios, now SFS, were the ones who created “Snowdrop”. The writer and voice of snowdrop was also there, Meredith Sims.

For those interested I have included a link to that very panel. I come in at about 22 minutes in. Though you’ll likely see me standing while looking a bit confused at around 20 minutes. This was because I didn’t know where to go to make sure I could make a comment after they opened up Q&A.

NOTE: Nobody made fun of me for this. Rather I had the individual sitting by me help me back to my seat while I waited for the wireless microphone to come around. Nothing but support.
