Timeline epiphany · 8:03am May 22nd, 2017
Alright! I'm watching Wubcake's Equestria Girls "I'll Make a Man Out of You" parody. The line "mysterious as the time of 30 moons!" comes up and I have ANOTHER epiphany.
See, every time I thought about Sunset Shimmer being gone, I remember she's been gone for three years in human world time (don't even get me started on the epiphany I came to regarding Equestria time vs Human time). We know she's been gone for at least three years because this is the FOURTH Fall Formal. Now, I brought this up in my post about the EQG Holiday Special (I have so many problems with that special). The fact that, since Hasbro is an American company, they probably use a US high school schedule and most US high schools begin late August. Therefore, Sunset had been there for at least four years.
How does this translate into the parody? Every time they said thirty moons, I equated it to three years. I assumed that Sunset had gone shortly before school started at Canterlot High, and had remained there because the mirror wasn't active for another three years. Since nighttime is usually The time at which my brain is functioning at its highest, I realized something when I heard that line in the song.
Thirty moons is a fucking month.
This mirror to another dimension possibly with which three highly dangerous creatures were banished and is being kept only partially guarded, allowing any villain who remotely wants to take over another world to do so... Opens for three days every month. The mirror equivalent of a Werewolf is now being kept COMPLETELY UNGUARDED in Twilight's Castle. This bitch could've gone to see her human friends even sooner than the Battle of the Bands if she wanted. Sunset Shimmer could've been visiting Equestria if she was so inclined. Why the fuck did we (and the writers for that damn matter) think the portal was closed for so long (and I've read enough fics to know I'm not the only one who thought the mirror was inoperable for years rather than a month at a time)?
The shit I realize late at night...
Im pretty sure the term moons refers to full lunar cycles though, so 30 moons = about 28 months. Or a little over two years. So my guess is she was gone for about 2 portal cycles or about 5 and a half years.
Unless you go to the whole tine loop or time distortion theory, in which case all bets are off
Portal should definitely still be guarded though.
4542497 Oh, okay. Thanks for the (possible?) clarification. Guh, freaking time. It's so wonky.
Still, I wonder what drabbles I can think up with the headcanon that it's per month rather than per two-ish years... Gotta finish all my other crap first though. Also, still haven't slept, so should probably do that.
Thanks again!
4542543 Yeah, after a quick Google check the term "moons" refers to the full cycle, specifically from full moon to full moon. However, that would definitely be an interesting, and possibly very humorous concept to explore.
