So yeah, Space Wars Day or whatever

Honestly I've been checked out on Star Wars for a long time: longer than before the new trilogy came around to sour it even further. I mean I technically still write Star Wars, though it's nothing that can be accepted by any ol' fan. For one thing, the Ssi-Ruuk are regularly represented, and another is that they're not presented as their original selves. Still a shame they're so under-utilized in

    Positive Vibes

So something curious has just happened: I just got done watching the South Park Post-Covid two part special, and it has put me in a very positive and hopeful mindset. Yeah: South Park of all things giving me the feel-goods. Like legitimate fuzzies about things working out.

May The Fourth Be With You, and a rant · 8:14pm May 4th, 2017

Well, it appears to be that special day that's been around for the past few years or so. A celebration of all things Star Wars, a day before a celebration of Mexican military prowess and an excuse to get drunk (but you can easily make any excuse for that). For this year, rather than remember it by chance while walking past my local Books-A-Million, I've started re-reading a Star Wars EU novel I haven't read in many years: a quaint little tome by the name of "The Truce at Bakura". Chronologically it takes place the day after Return of the Jedi ended, and filled with some diplomatic intrigue. But what makes this near and dear to my heart is that it introduced an alien species that probably none of you heard of: the Ssi-Ruuk.

What are Ssi-Ruuk? They're space raptors. Sentient space raptors that communicate through chirps and whistles and have a thing for sucking the life force out of prisoners and using that to power their battle droids. Pretty damn cool in my book. Too bad they only appeared in just this one book, and mentioned in the Yuuzhan Vong crisis, and then utterly gutted by The Force Awakens like every other EU property. But they live on in my own little world of Star Wars fiction as part of the main cast, for I'm apparently the only person who really cares for these reptilian bad-asses. And I mean why did they have to kill the EU anyway? They had tons of material to go by in making a new trilogy. Sure it means they're free to do their own thing, but couldn't they keep the cool bits like Mara Jade or the Ssi-Ruuk? They kept Thrawn around for Rebels, but I guess that's only because he's insanely popular, whereas my Ssi-Ruuk homies are barely a blip. I mean come on why aren't they more of a thing? Who wouldn't want frickin' space raptors in your space opera? That's what those old sci-fi serials like Flash Gordon were all about: wacky cool-ass shit. Still you let me down Lucas in letting this opportunity slip, and you further let me down Abrams and everyone else at the present helm. I demand Ssi-Ruuk recognition/appreciation! I call out for all of you to do yourselves a favor and proliferate them. Include them in your roleplays, your fanfics, your fan art. Don't let my silly high school writings be their only sanctuary!

And with that I think that's as good a place to leave a plug for my Fanfiction.net account. For those curious as to what my writing style was like before I entered the realm of pony, feel free to peruse. You might find a surprise or two, as well as my Star Wars fics which, I would like to point out, were originally hand-written before being transcribed into a digital medium. So anyway, happy May 4th, happy early Cinco de Mayo, and all the best!
