This fandom is ready to become seven years (Though if you throw us in with the G1 crowd, longer than that.) old. That is a long time for developments and stories to change. For the writers to come up with new ideas and ways of looking at things. Too often we forget that this is not like a magna or novel, where there is a set course for characters to develop. If anything this is like a comic book series, where things can change because a new writer will go "I think I would like it if..."
Thus, our stories are forever at the whim of the writer and their desires and constructs. What can seem as new and original at one point can change immeaditally in a few weeks from now. A fic that protray's Twilight as an only child will become changed by season 2 and a story that paints Qrow from RWBY as a heroic and sober figure will get a big surprise by the time season 3 comes out to the fans.
So, the question becomes what changes can we expect?
That is what I want to figure out on a special segment I like to call...
What if _____ was written today?
This is where I look back on a classic fic and think about the changes that occur within the story if it was written right now.
This time, we will look at probably one of the most popular of my live reads. The empty room
Ah, the old days. This story came out way back in season one with an interesting look at Twilight's relationship with Celestia. In turn, she is also sent through hell and back to earn a happy ending. So my question is, what might change with this story?

Well, first of all. Since this fic has Twilight's father being evil and killing her outright, I have to wonder if Shining Armor might end up having a big role in this story. Perhaps when he finds out about Twilihgt's death, he does some investigations and soon comes upon his father's corpse. This will put him in league wiht Nightmare Moon's little team of rebels. As Shining finds out the truth, he also finds out more about twilight and th fact that they are not really related. Considering that there was some good emotional bits here and there, I have to wonder if Shining Armor would end up helping broaden the theme of family in this story.
Twilight frowned, "I guess...this means I can't call you BBBFF anymore."
"No," Shining smiled as he hugged her, "Call me that all you like."
With Trixie, I can only assume that the alicorn amulet is a part of the medallions of nightmare and Trixie was able to break it somehow. Perhaps out of her own ego. Though this brings out the question of if she would still fall for big mac or if Starlight shows up and they end up together. I don't see much of a change in Trixie's plot. However, I do with Spitfire, as maybe she might end up confronting her own inner demons and mistakes as a leader of the wonderbolts.
One big pony I could see having an effect on the story would be Sunset Shimmer. She might have ended up becoming a twin of Twilight Sparkle, or Celestia's oldest daughter and she hasn't said it. Maybe Sunset leaving was a cover up and she was hiding the real reason why she ran away. Hell, you could make Sunset a relatin to Celestia and the story would become more awesome.
Heh, I don't think TER would be quite the same story without the freedom we had back then to create alternate circumstances without being bombed by outraged "fans".

Please, compared to some of the stupidity of the Sonic fanbase and members of Star Trek, I wish they had our outraged fans.
Then again, as I always said, fans will be fans. There are gonna be idoits, there are going to be morons, but what is important is the story that you craft and are having fun while writing it. After all, to this day there are still people who will write a Vegeta and Usagi ship and others.
You know, another thought... if I had thought of this story now-a-days, it probably would've been a Sunset Shimmer fic.
