Finding a last-minute babysitter sure is hard, especially when you practically have a local shaggy-bearded unicorn babysitter back at home.

Some of it was probably because they thought Twilight would appreciate spending time with her niece. Of course, no one considered any potential scheduling conflicts...
Twilight joins the other mane 6 in a challenge of biting off more than you can chew, so she spends some time with the Future Ruler Of Equestria and havoc ensues as Shining Armor and Cadence look at art with their minds elsewhere

I can see that being a thing, sure. But if they were so desperate to find a sitter last minute, one would think a local option in the Crystal Empire should be first pickings before hopping to the next town over that conveniently has a potential sitter in the same area as where you plan on staying for the afternoon.
Which would be very inconvenient if Twilight wasn't even home at the time they knocked, since they would have been screwed. That's how awful that plan was, and they're also absolutely lucky they caught her before she left.
Mind you, I don't think they were thinking straight. But they needed to learn the whole "advance notice" part way more than Twilight needed time management lessons.
