the AMD K6 lineup is famous for being able to competitively match and at rare times, even beat Intel's processors, even though they were competing against the Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium 2, and early Pentium 3s. Talk about overachieving. Resultingly, AMD used the huge profits from that series to create the K7 lineup of chips, more famously known as the Athlon series. K8 came a couple years after, beating Intel to become the first 64-bit x86 chip on the market. Then it went downhill from there when Intel began to step up its game.
