Elder Scrolls Online? · 5:31am Mar 11th, 2017
Duuudes I've been playing a bunch of Skyrim lately due to one of my friends getting me back into it. SO naturally I've been looking into the lore, and was reading about ESOnline, and actually just saw this week that Morrowind is coming out.
Sooo... does anyone play ESO? And is it pretty good? How different is it than Skyrim? And have the changes they've implemented since it was released actually improved the game from the knock-off WoW clone it started out as?
I might actually look at getting it once Morrowind comes out... provided its, you know, good.
Planning on playing it at some point in time
Yes, it has improved. But at its core, it's still WoW with an ES coat of paint.

Damn. That's more or less a disappointment. I don't really care much for WoW and liked how Skyrim plays, and I knew ESO wasn't quite like Skyrim but I was hoping it was more like that than generic mmorpg gameplay
4451784 At their core, most all MMORPGs are going to have WoW elements. WoW was, and continues to be, a huge success. It's no surprise that others would try to emulate it. (Notice all the Minecraft clones out there?)
But more so, the way to keep players playing is with the same mechanics anyway. Grinding for levels, loot, weapons, money, magic, whatever. And to be fair, most of the more recent attempts at MMORPGs have been objectively better than WoW. But they will always fail.
Why?
Because WoW is not about the game. It's about the community.
Most of its players are there because that is the only place where they can meet their (sometimes only) friends. If a person wanted to move to a new MMORPG, they would want all of their friends to come. And they would want all of their friends. And so on into infinity. But you can't organize the entire WoW community to do anything on that scale. And because of that, WoW will never have to be the best again. It only needed to be the best, first.
I've tried two other MMORPGs since WoW and I've had my heart broken both times. Nowadays, I prefer small-scale co-op games with better quality of content for time spent in the game. (I'm a busy writer after all.)
Now if they made Skyrim co-op, I'd be all over that like a hobo on a ham sandwich.
I've played it a bit, and while it has some ES elements and some mechanics of its own, it still is way too close to the MMO model.

Pretty much where I'm at. WoW isn't god awful but it is so damn tedious and dull. If ESO is pretty much the same and doesn't have a plot that actually engages me, then I'll have to pass.

But is it as fun as Skyrim? Or would I be better just sticking to that game?
4452257 Skyrim is better, at least in the sense of enjoying what you're playing. If you haven't tried Morrowind yet, with all the upgraded bells and whistles mods can get you, that might be good too. Very different game though.
