Magnetic Videography - 20th Century-Fox · 1:37am Jan 18th, 2017

"As you know, Magnetic Video was started by Andre Blay and Fox was the first studio he was able to license movies from. Movie studios weren't sure if there'd be much of a market for movies on tape, but when Magnetic Video was a success Fox ended up buying the company." - Jesse Skeen

FUN FACT: Fox, when they bought Magnetic, viewed it as a chance to recapture audiences that no longer go to the movies; Fox had market strategies which were supposed to help eliminate video pirates, and intended to launch new productions aimed specifically at the video market.

This chronicles all the Magnetic Video releases that were of 20th Century-Fox movies. Only seven catalogue numbers from the Fox series (which started at 1001) are known to have been blank. The years are those that the movie came out in, and the descriptions of those are best left to the TV Tropes article. There are notable quirks around some of the tapes that TVTropes doesn't mention, such as that early printings of CL-1037 (1h58m) had "Part 1" printed on both sides of the cardboard slipcover case.

In lieu of a product description, early Magnetic Video releases had a list of the company's other titles on the back. As Magnetic's release inventory grew, they shortened a growing list from an increasingly overstuffed one to a more readable one, capped off with the inevitable "and many more". The font and background for the list eventually changed.

Early Magnetic releases had a brown bar and a black band reading "Magnetic Video Corporation" at the bottom:

Later ones had the text "MAGNETIC VIDEO - A TWENTIETH CENTURY-FOX COMPANY" in between two red bars at the bottom:

There is also a variation of that label where the "MAGNETIC VIDEO" font is significantly larger; I will post that variation to DeviantArt as that hasn't been scanned yet.

[Here, the company morphs into 20th Century-Fox Video; the tapes below suspiciously had the Magnetic Video logo to open select printings. Tapes made available for rental, including History of the World: Part 1 below, were later reissued for sale with all references to Magnetic replaced by references to 20th Century-Fox Video. Their oversized packaging was very similar to early CBS/Fox Video releases from 1982-1983, and have been nicknamed by some as "Fox Drawer Box" or simply "Fox Box". These were the final releases produced by Magnetic Video Corporation.]
