RCA/Columbia Pictures Videography, Domestic Releases, 20000/30000/60000 Series · 12:34am Feb 6th, 2019

The labels on the first few tapes in the series were white, using a red box with the interiors containing "(STUDIO) PRESENTS", the title, the MPAA rating, the copyright stamp, the running time and the FBI warning placed inside. Beta tapes had the FBI warning placed below the box. Canadian releases had the Interpol warning in the box (on VHS tapes) and below it (on Beta tapes). From 1984 to 1985, the logo was in black and white.

In 1985, the logo went to color, with the RCA logo in red and the Columbia logo in blue.

In 1987, the background of the Torch Lady border became red. Photo credits: VHSCollector.com, 45worlds

22000/32000/62000 Series

This series ran from 1988 to 1989 and was probably intended to be used to house older films from Columbia Pictures which were not in print before either those two years. Most of the numbers in it went unused, and half of the ones that were tended to be applied to compilations of shorts from The Three Stooges.

25000/35000/65000 Series

This series ran from 1988 to early-to-mid 1989 and was intended to be used on new releases from Columbia Pictures. The first number in this series was assigned to Little Nikita, a crime drama about an F.B.I. Agent working to uncover an all-American family as Soviet sleeper agents, and getting caught up in friendship with their unaware son, played by River Phoenix. The next number in the series was assigned to [uThe Beast, a drama with a cult following based on the true story of a Soviet T-55 tank who became lost during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. That film was followed in the series by Vibes, starring 1980s pop star Cyndi Lauper as a ditzy psychic who teams up with an equally odd psychic friend (Jeff Goldblum) to find the "source of psychic energy" in the Andes of Ecuador. This would in turn be followed by such films as Zelly and Me (a drama screened at the Sundance Film Festival that starred Isabella Rossellini, Glynis Johns, Alexandra Johnes, and even David Lynch) Pulse (about a suburban Los Angeles home being terrorized by a pulse of electricity), and Stars & Bars (based on a Scottish novel about an art expert encountering crazy characters while trying to track down a rare Renoir painting in the South.) All six of those films failed at the box office.

However, a big hit in the series came around the corner in 1988's School Daze, which was Spike Lee's second film and one of the three (along with 1986's She's Gotta Have It and 1989's Do the Right Thing) that established him as a filmmaker. The film centered on fraternity and sorority members clashing with other students during homecoming weekend at an historically black college while also touching on African-American attitudes toward matters such as skin color and hair texture.

After that. it was back to theatrical flops. Judge Reinhold starred in a comedy called Vice Versa, the first American adaptation of the book, following three British adaptations, and it proved to be much more successful on video than it was in theatres. The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking was the seventh film adaptation of the three-book Swedish series (to date, the only one of the eight that were done by a major Hollywood studio) and failed to recoup an estimated $8-10 million cost. Then there was Rocket Gibraltar, a vehicle for Burt Lancaster that marked the film debut of Macaulay Culkin, who'd briefly become famous via the first two Home Alone films.

Besides School Daze, the other big hit came in a comedy-drama from David Seltzer called Punchline. The film starred Tom Hanks as a talented young comic helping a housewife (Sally Field) get into stand-up comedy. Punchline and School Daze were the only two Columbia releases from 1988 to recoup their costs at the box office.

The highly acclaimed crime drama Things Change and True Believer (loosely based K. W. Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning articles on the conviction of an immigrant Chol Soo Lee for a gangland murder in San Francisco's Chinatown district) completed the 65000 series.

The label in this series was the 1987 version of the RCA/Columbia label, which had the Torch Lady in a red border. On True Believer, the Columbia logo was depicted prominently at the right-hand corner of the label.

27000/67000 Series

This series was a vehicle for films made by Tri-Star Pictures. The studio was originally a joint venture between Columbia Pictures, CBS, and HBO. In 1985, CBS sold its stake in Tri-Star, and in 1986, so did HBO.

Initially, all three companies competed with one another for VHS, Betamax, Laserdisc and even CED rights to Tri-Star's films. But in an unprecedented move for Tri-Star, RCA/Columbia's 67000 series housed a majority of the films that studio released between September 21, 1987 and February 3, 1989. The only exceptions were the films The Running Man, Ironweed, and Man on Fire (which were all released by Vestron Video in the U.S.), the Vision PDG productions High Spirits and Bat*23 (both of which came out on Media Home Entertainment) and films produced for Tri-Star by Carolco Pictures (which was the parent corporation of International Video Entertainment, or I.V.E.) The Laserdisc releases of all the titles in this series came from Image Entertainment and used that company's standard numbering system.

The first five releases were from late 1987 and were comprised of The Principal (a dark comedy with James Belushi that was a modest hit at the box office), Like Father, Like Son (a vehicle for Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron that was effectively demolished by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert), Suspect (a legal drama starring Cher and coming right before a bigger hit she was in called Moonstruck), Gaby: A True Story, and Forever, Lulu (Alec Baldwin's film debut).

The 1988 slate of Tri-Star releases in the series included For Keeps (the last teen-oriented film Molly Ringwald was in), Switching Channels (a comedy more noted for the harsh on set in-fighting between Burt Reynolds and Kathleen Turner than it is for being the '80s version of an old play called The Front Page), The Seventh Sign (an apocalyptic film with biblical elements), Sunset (a Blake Edwards film with James Garner occupying more screen time than top-billed Bruce Willis and the Philadelphia Inquirer saying they "swine" according to National Lampoon's True Facts section), Short Circuit 2 (the sequel to the original that killed off any hope of there being a Short Circuit 3), The Blob (a grade-A remake of the 1958 grade-Z film), Sweet Hearts Dance (from Robert Greenwald, who would eventually direct a number of politically progressive documentaries during the 2000s), and The Kiss (basically an allegory on the 1980s AIDS crisis).

The 1989 release in the 67000 series was Who's Harry Crumb? starring John Candy as an often incompetent, sometimes brilliant, private investigator looking for the victim of a kidnapping. It was a flop at the box office despite having the involvement of NBC (which was the #1 network of the time in the U.S.)

Unlike the other RCA/Columbia releases from the time, which had red borders for the front, back and spine (the latter of which had a black interior for the border), the titles in the 67000 series used full artwork. The back covers contained the Tri-Star logo with "VIDEO" replacing "PICTURES", as well as the "$250,000 fine" variant of the FBI warning.

The label in this series was the 1987 version of the RCA/Columbia label, which had the Torch Lady in a red border, although some copies had the torch lady in the standard blue border. The Tri-Star logo was depicted prominently on the right-hand corner of the label.
