Ever get that feeling... · 7:38am Dec 17th, 2016
...that you're doing something right, convinced that what you're truly doing is the best, only to find out months later that what you were wrong the entire time?
Yeah, about that...
For those of you that don't want to watch the video, a brief summary; bear with me, it will be important a bit later.
Basically, Jim starts talking about a fairly recent game made by Square Enix and how the company had a complete roadmap of updates to change, of all things, parts of the narrative. Now, this wouldn't be a bad if it weren't for one thing — games relying more and more on just digital distribution (ie. no discs or cardridges; just accounts and downloads) and several of them requiring massive day one patches just to play on launch day or require an always-on internet connection.
Effectively, by changing such an important part as story via mandatory updates, the old game will simply cease to exist. Taking another medium, Jim also noted an infamous example in George Lucas and his tendency to keep changing things that didn't need to be changed when it comes to Star Wars movies.
After watching the video, I went 'dang' and that's as much swear words as I'm willing to put up here.
I had been doing this for months; changing things despite people liking them because I thought that critics were more important than popular vote via likes, but the fact that most people like Touching the sky as it is now determined that was a lie.
To be honest with you guys, even to this day, I've changed nothing. It is by no means the most perfect thing on this site, not by a long shot, but I had so much fun writing and then reading it to myself that I just didn't really care. If I made someone's day by making them at least smile, that was enough of a reward for me.
Part of the reason why I wanted to rewrite it was because, well, I keep evolving as a writer and I want to showcase that I'm not just sitting on my butt all day, doing nothing. Maybe I should have looked back first to see if that was really neccessary.
Either way, Touching the sky won't be replaced by a complete rewrite. I'll just correct grammatical and stylistical errors and be done with it, like I should have promised in the first place.
Thank you reading and take care,
R
