Hi, I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.
I feel like this blog post is long overdue, considering that my last update was in August of 2015, but I'd like to talk about my fic, Home Sweet Home, and shed some light on what's happened to that fic.
The next chapter was supposed to be simple and short (It would've been about Rainbow at the hospital and learns what's wrong with her wings) but I struggled writing it and coming up with good dialogue. I tried to get inspiration by reading what I had already written for that chapter but I found myself unsatisfied with it and whenever I tried to rewrite it I still wasn't happy with it. Eventually I decided to take a break from the story, but I just couldn't find the motivation to get back to it.
When I first came up with the idea for this fic, it was just supposed to be about Rainbow trying to connect with her son and adjusting to family life, but I didn't think that was enough to sustain a multichapter fic, so I came up with some subplots. However, as I started writing some of these subplots I started to question if they were even good and if they were really necessary to the main plot. It made me wonder if this was a fanfic or several fanfic ideas that were sloppily sown together like some Frankenstein monster.
The biggest subplot was probably Rainbow's wings and how they would tire out when preforming extravagant stunts, which were finally starting to take its toll on her wings. I did that to give her a reason for her not to go on so many tours since she had to cut back on her trademark stunts or else she might lose the use of her wings. However, I feel that it would be more meaningful for Rainbow to make that decision herself rather than her being forced to because of health reasons.
Also her wings subplot would have involved another subplot where Rainbow is afraid that she's getting old. This would've started in the next chapter and been resolved a chapter later where Rainbow is supposed to take her son out trick r' treating on Nightmare Night, but first she takes him with her to pull some of her old pranks. However, her pranks would fail to scare any of the foals, making her feel even more insecure about getting old, and she becomes determined to prank some pony, forgetting about taking Silverwing trick r' treating. While I still feel like this was a good idea, I just don't think it was necessary for the fic, especially since there was no build up to Rainbow's fear of growing older.
Then there was the subplot with Cinnamon Swirl. While I liked that I had that mystery of whether she really did have feelings for Thunderlane, or if Rainbow was just being paranoid, I didn't really know how to keep up that mystery or where to go with this subplot until it got resolved toward the end of the story.
The chapter I was working on also would have shown that Thunderlane was now determined to get back in shape since Soarin' had to save Rainbow when she was falling because he wasn't fast enough. Once again I just didn't really know where to go with this idea after introducing it.
There was another subplot I never got around to where Scootaloo gets pregnant and is scared because of her young age (she would've been 18 or 19) and Rainbow would've helped her get through it, since she'd be able to relate to her because she also panicked after learning she (Rainbow) was pregnant.
In all honesty I think this might have been too ambitious of a fic for me when I was used to doing one shots, which forced me to be more grounded and focused on the main story, rather than coming up with various subplots.
I don't regret what I wrote, on the contrary, I feel proud of chapter 2, especially the interactions between Rainbow and her family, and while I don't feel as strongly about the next 2 chapters, I still think their good, chapter 3 more so than 4.
I've put Home Sweet Home on hiatus, instead of canceling it, just in case I ever get inspired to return to this fic, but if I do it will probably go through several changes. Sorry to the fans of this story.
Well I hope that you will get back to this story again, and I think that you sub plots are interesting as it shows the transition and how other characters are evolving around her.
For what I can understand of the situation RD, forcing the responsibility of being a mother on to her would easily scare her away, but she is trying to persist and needs to get to terms that she is in an other phase of her life now, and that she has to revise her own priorities now.
I think RD and Thunderlane have difficulty being a couple again, as they have to readjust to each other again and try to readjust
Thunderlane is used to taking care of of his son alone and isn't used to had RD taking the center role of the family all of the sudden, or at least not being consulted for any decisions for them.
Can't wait to see more of your story again.
I could honiestly see the idea of Scootaloo gets pregnant as a one shot.
I just read your two stories I really hope the story does continue on because I am curious how this will go
