MCA Records UK Album Discography: 2600-2799 (1975-77)

At the beginning of 1975, around MCF 2615, MCA made an awkward jump in its cataloguing sequence in the UK, right into MCF 2665, which was a reissue of Camel's debut album. Camel was a progressive rock group from Surrey whose debut album was their only album released on MCA; their subsequent albums, up until 1984's Stationary Traveller, were all issued on Decca (with their second, Mirage, having been issued on Decca's Deram subsidiary).

Welsh group Budgie released their final album on the label, MCF-2723, in 1975; they'd then go to A&M, where they put out If I Were Brittania I'd Waive the Rules and Impeckable before that label dropped them in 1978. The original line up of the group had Burke Shelley on vocals and bass, Tony Bourge on guitar and vocals, and Ray Phillips on drums; Steve Williams became drummer in time for MCF-2723.

One notable one-off, MCF-2699, is by Telly Savalas (1922-1994), a legendary actor who starred in films such as ''Escape To Athena'', ''The Greatest Story Ever Told'', and ''Birdman of Alcatraz'' and is most famous as ''Kojak'', one of then-subsidiary Universal's various private detectives that roamed around the television back in the 1970s. The album was probably released on MCA (A) as a cash-in on his TV fame and/or (B) due to corporate connections between MCA and Universal. We show a bit of fairness here, as one of England's biggest chart hits during 1975 (and probably the biggest hit MCA scored there that year) was Kojak's rendition of Bread's hit single ''If''.

Finally, toward the end of the series, MCA finally got a taste of UK chart success with another American recording of theirs. In England, the funk-filled festival known as Car Wash (MCF-2799, confusingly numbered alongside the soundtrack for The Scarlet Buccaneer) produced two sensational UK hits: the title track went to #9 on the UK Singles Chart; on the same chart, the seductive ''I Wanna Get Next To You'' hit #14; surprisingly, the single ''I'm Going Down'' was a big R&B hit in the US but didn't chart in the UK.
