MCA Records UK Album Discography: 2500-2600 (1973-75) · 3:24am Oct 4th, 2016

American. The Music Corporation of America was founded in 1924, as a booking agency, by Jules Stern. It began issuing records in 1962, when it bought the US branch of Decca, which included the Coral and Brunswick labels; it brought all three together in 1973, under the MCA name. More acquisitions followed: the ABC group in 1979; Chess in 1985; and Motown in 1988 (though they sold it on in 1993). In 1995 MCA itself was bought, by the Seagram company. Seagram dropped the MCA name, and rebranded its whole concern as the Universal Music Group.
In Britain, the MCA label came on the scene in 1968 with Decca handling its manufacturing; hitherto its products had been licensed by Decca and issued on Coral or Brunswick. It is reported to have been independent for the first eighteen months or so, before joining up with Decca again, this time as a licensed label. The company's London office, MCA U.K., had a certain amount of autonomy, and rejoined Decca a year later than its American parent did [. . .] The licensing arrangement lasted until the start of 1974, when EMI took over as licenser. From October 1976 MCA took over the responsibility for marketing its records, though it remained with EMI for manufacture and distribution. The agreement with EMI lasted until the 1st of July 1979, at which point the company turned to CBS for pressing and distribution; according to Billboard magazine of the 27th of January 1979 CBS was also to deal with the sales side of things. In that same year MCA also sprouted a short-lived offshoot, Infinity, which was handled by CBS from its inception, in January. There had been an earlier subsidiary, Uni, during MCA's time at Decca.

This discography covers the 2500-3000 series starting with 2501, from 1973; many of the early albums in this series are reissues. The first section in this series goes up to 2599; another section will be started up at 2600. This discography is oriented at UK record collectors, but US readers should be able to read this too. Many of the MCA UK LPs are hard to find here in the States, so good luck!

NOTE: This is my first-ever attempt at an album discography, the kind you can see all the time by clicking here.
