Do most stories really need "sex" in them? · 11:12pm Sep 20th, 2016
There probably is no way to make a good opening for this, but I know when a good story can be either ruined or brightened up by just throwing in a sex scene. No, I am not anti-sex, hell more than half of the stories I favorited has the sex tag on it. If you can write a decent sex scene then props to you, if you really can't and just want more views just for the sake then you should really think twice about your story.
Over the past couple of years. I read some really great stories that are rated mature and really wanted to root for the characters. They were likable, their characters grew with each chapter and it really made you care about them. So sex should be coming right? Well, some authors did not go as far as putting in descriptive sex just to make the characters come full circle, some of them did not even get past the hand-holding stage. Or hoof. Then there were stories that were good but the sex scenes became were tasteless it just felt like this just came out of nowhere. Kind of like action films in the 80's and 90's. Sex stories can be good, we all read them. Some of us have a taste for different things and I'm fine with that. As long as you put time and effort into it. Unlike some stories I read in the past... It's a long story.
But what I'm really driving at... Are stories that are crossovers with Doom or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or anything else. They got the basic gist of what one side is supposed to do and bring their game to the MLP side of the table. Some crossover stories have good direction, most don't. I'm not a big COD fan but I've read one of my friend's x-over story in the past and really could not make it past a certain chapter. It wasn't bad, just drove itself into a ditch once he started pairing the COD team members with random ponies to have sex. Why? Is it pairing math? Is it desperation for views? The story itself was fine in the first few chapters, the author himself kept the characters as their respected selves and got them down to the T... until they started banging horses after a few more chapters. You're probably asking, "If he wrote down the COD side so well and in-character. The sex parts should be interesting right?" Well... no and... mostly no. The way how it was written is that it felt just forced and scrunched into a few paragraphs then passed it off like it was supposed to be natural. Like Ghost and Applejack just hump each other in the barn like it's no big whoop. Just imagine just coming upon the paragraphs when you're first reading them and they're over just as soon as your brain tries to process it. See where I'm getting at now? Don't worry, this story got the MST3K treatment on a podcast.
Sure there can be a dedicated chapter for this sort of thing. But once the author gets a few comments saying he rocks at writing sex scenes, then he feels like he or she doesn't need to change anything up. Hell, I'm just as guilty too because I wrote Whorseville. That piece of crap... But when you're crossing over something like MLP to a game or anime just for them to hump each other and somehow complete a huge task of defeating a villain when one side probably could have taken them down easily, you really got to wonder who you're really writing this for. It's like a bait and hook. Doesn't matter how good it is, if you write the Doom marine having butt sex with Celestia for a few paragraphs just for shock value, I'm really thinking you're just trying to bait people. Because really, Doom is about running and gunning down demons from hell. MLP is about making friends and how to deal with day to day situations. How the hell does sex fit into that? Maybe if it's written well and made it subtle, sure, but if it's just out of nowhere and feels cheap, then yeah it's not needed.
That's why I don't have Beavis and Butt-head in Do Equestia going around humping horses. I could, but the story is not written well enough even for its' juvenile humor to dabble in that sort of thing. Plus, I don't want to. Now, in Do Equestria Girls... there might be some subtle hints of more nad kicking and boob talk. I really don't need to go into 'Humans in Equestria' stories, we pretty much can guarantee that 75 percent of them are going to dabble in sex. I don't really read these because, I don't have a fondness for the genre. Same goes for the new thing of, humans coming to Equestria but not as themselves, but as an anime or game character. Ugh...
But by all means, if you want to write a story about the main six just having sex for the sake it and no other plot details getting in the way, go for it. Basically just a porn story so, the story is not really that important to begin with. Now it just seems a big contradiction huh? No, that's why porn is porn and Lord of the Rings is a story about a couple hobbits trying to destroy a ring. Sure fanfiction can fuel a FF writer's desire there to be more to a series, but the rules still kind of apply there.
Well, I don't intend on writing sex scenes into any of my stories anytime soon, nor will I probably ever; I prefer keeping them to the childlike atmosphere of the show itself, feels more natural writing them as much in-character and sticking the tone to its roots as possible. Also... I don't like to dwell on ANY of the characters - pony or human - going at it. XD
My Anon-a-Miss story doesn't have sex in it although it does have two people in love with each other but that doesn't mean that there shall be sex in it.
