LOS PEGASUS

Directed by Gordon Parks

UAS 29260/61

September 17, 1971, Los Pegasus. In front of a crowd filled with over 100,000 ponies as enthusiastic about him as the stallion himself, Thunderbolt Sentinel provides an opportunity for them like no other in history. They experience someone who has been given the opportunity to entertain the crowd - and, what's more, someone who uses that opportunity to its full advantage. In other words, Thunderbolt Sentinel, a true showman at a remarkable moment in his life, has been successfully asked to create it. This opportunity has also had the benefit of being captured on film and said film's accompanying record, at which you are now looking at. Crowds like these are of the kind that have always awaited Mr. Sentinel, to the point where he is very, VERY unlikely to stop seeing them anytime soon.
- Jesse Coffey
P.S. Please note that the entirety of each side of the record is unbanded, i.e. there has been no attempt at separation of any kind between the tracks that appear on this record.

JESSE COFFEY (me): Ladies and gentlemen, you are about to experience someone who has been given the opportunity to entertain the crowd - and, what's more, someone who uses that opportunity to its full advantage. In other words, a true showman at a remarkable moment in his life, has been successfully asked to create it. This opportunity has also had the benefit of being captured on film and said film's accompanying record, soon to appear at your shop. Crowds like these are of the kind that have always awaited this man, to the point where he is very, VERY unlikely to stop seeing them anytime soon. Ladies and gentlemen, one of Equestria's greatest entertainers at this moment in time, Thunderbolt Sentinel!

We've only just begun to live
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way
We've only begun

Before the rising sun we fly
So many roads to choose
We start out walking and learn to run
And yes, we've just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talking it over just the two of us
Working together day to day
Together

And when the evening comes we smile
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
And yes, We've just begun to live
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way
We've only begun

Before the rising sun we fly
So many roads to choose
We start out walking and learn to run
And yes, we've just begun

Sharing horizons that are new to us
Watching the signs along the way
Talking it over just the two of us
Working together day to day
Together

And when the evening comes we smile
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
And yes, We've just begun.

(audience applauds)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL (of course): OK, I like having fun just as much as the next guy, and now let's all have it!

Well, I'm a steamroller, baby, I'm bound to roll all over you.
Yes, I'm a steamroller now, baby, I'm bound to roll all over you.
I'm gonna inject your soul with some sweet rock 'n roll and shoot you full of rhythm and blues.

Well, I'm a cement mixer, a churning urn of burning funk.
Yes, I'm a cement mixer for you, baby, a churning urn of burning funk.
Well, I'm a demolition derby, yes, a hefty hunk of steaming junk.

(Sentinel sings while the audience claps along)
Now, I'm a napalm bomb, baby, just guaranteed to blow your mind.
Yeah, I'm a napalm bomb for you, baby, just guaranteed to blow your mind
And if I can't have your love for my own, sweet child, won't be nothing left behind.

(audience applauds and cheers)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: Whoo! I'll be damned if that thing didn't excite you! You know one of the things I do in my spare time is I go to the movies. Here are three songs from three recent ones that I happen to have been faced with the pleasure of performing for you all.

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
Just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothing seems to fit
Oh, raindrops keep fallin' on my head
Keep a-fallin'

Cause I just done me some talking to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleeping on the job
Oh, raindrops keep fallin' on my head
They keep fallin'

But there's one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me
Won't defeat me
It won't be long till happiness
Comes up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me
Cause I ain't gonna stop the rain by complaining
Because I'm free
Nothing's bothering me

But where do I begin to tell the story
of how great a love can be,
the sweet love story that is older than the sea,
the simple truth about the love she brings to me?

Where do I start?

With her first hello,
she gave new meaning to this empty world of mine.
They’ll never be another love another time
because she came into my life and made the living fine

She fills my heart!

She fills my heart with very special things
angel songs and wild imaginings!
She fills my soul with so much love
that any where I go I’m never lonely.
With her around who could be lonely?
I reach for her hand
and she’s always there.

How long does it last?
Can love be measured by the hours in a day?
I have no answers now,
but this much I can say:
I know I’ll need her until the stars all burn away
and she’ll be there!

And I'll tell her:
Love, look at the two of us
Strangers in many ways
We've got a lifetime to share
So much to say
And as we go
From day to day
I'll feel you close to me
But time alone will tell
Let's take a lifetime to say
"I knew you well"
For only time will tell us so
And love may grow
For all we know.

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: The fun never ends with me and with that in mind let's have some more fun!

Aw, Cracklin' Rosie, get on board
We're gonna ride
Till there ain't no more to go
Taking it slow
And Lord, don't you know
We'll have me a time with a poor man's lady

Hitchin' on a twilight train
Ain't nothing here that I care to take along
Maybe a song
To sing when I want
No need to say please to no man
For a happy tune

Oh, I love my Rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me we go in style
Cracklin' Rose,
You're a store-bought woman
But you make me sing like a guitar hummin'
So hang on to me, girl,
Our song keeps runnin' on
Play it now, play it now
Play it now, my baby

Cracklin' Rosie, make me a smile
Girl, if it lasts for an hour, that's all right
We got all night to set the world right
Find us a dream that don't ask no questions
Yes!

Oh, I love my Rosie child
You got the way to make me happy
You and me we go in style
Cracklin' Rose,
You're a store-bought woman
But you make me sing like a guitar hummin'

Yes!

(audience applauds)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: While we're there, let's talk about Bridleway for a few minutes of your time because, well, Bridleway has brought us many a great thing. And let's see if we can work in songs from there to sing. Hmm . . . I got it!

I have often walked down this street before;
But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before
All at once am I Several stories high,
knowing I'm on the street where you live.
Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour Out of ev'ry door?
No, it's just on the street where you live!

They say that falling in love is wonderful
It's wonderful, so they say
And with a moon up above, it's wonderful
It's wonderful, so they tell me

I can't recall who said it
I know I never read it
I only know they tell me that love is grand
And

The thing that's known as romance
Is wonderful, wonderful, in every way
So they say

As long as she needs me
I know where I must be
I'll cling on steadfastly
As long as she needs me

As long as life is long
I'll love her right or wrong
And somehow, I'll be strong
As long as she needs me

If you are lonely
Then you will know
When someone needs you
You love them so

Consider yourself at home
Consider yourself one of the family
We've taken to you so strong
It's clear we're going to get along
Consider yourself , well in
Consider yourself a part of the furniture
There isn't a lot to spare
Who cares?
Whatever we've got, we share!

And oh! The towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near.
The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear!
People stop and stare. They don't bother me.
For there's no where else on earth that I would rather be.
Let the time go by, I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live.

(audience applauds; band begins playing ''Rose Garden'')

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime
When you take you gotta give so live and let live and let go oh oh oh oh
I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden

I could promise you things like big diamond rings
But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover
So you better think it over
Well, if sweet talking you could make it come true
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter
But what would it matter
So smile for a while and let's be jolly love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime

I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon
But if that's what it takes to hold you I'd just as soon let you go
But there's one thing I want you to know
You'd better look before you leap still waters run deep
And there won't always be someone there to pull you out
And you know what I'm talking about
So smile for a while and let's be jolly love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime.....

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime.....

(audience applauds)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: While we're on the subject of gardens, I figured it'd now be time to go onto a meaningful garden. One with among the most valuable life lessons I'm ever going to teach you. Here goes nothin'!

(audience sings: Jesus loves the little children
All the little children of the world
Red and yellow, black and white
They are precious in his sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL (as band warms up): That's right!
Everything is beautiful
In its' own way
Like a starry summer night
Or a snow covered winter's day
Everybody's beautiful
In their own way
Under God's heaven
The world's gonna find a way

There is none so blind
That is he who will not see
We must not close our minds
We must let our thought be free
For every hour that passes by
You know the world
Gets a little bit older
It's time to realize
That beauty lies
In the eyes of the beholder

Everything is beautiful
In its' own way
Like a starry summer nights
Or a snow covered winter's day
Ah, sing it children
Everybody's beautiful
In their own way
Under God's heaven
The world's gonna find a way

We shouldn't care
About the length of his hair
Or the color of his skin
Don't worry about
what shows from without
but the love that lives within
We're gonna get it all together now
Everything gonna work out fine
Just take a little time
to look on the good side my friend
And straighten it out in your mind

Now why don't you sing it with me!

Everything is beautiful
In its' own way
Like a starry summer nights
Or a snow covered winter's day
Everybody's beautiful
In their own way
Under God's heaven
The world's gonna find a way

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: Figured I'd open Side 3 of the record you are now looking at with a rendition of another tune you might've heard on Bridleway and then sing two more songs after that. This is because two songs following that, well . . . why would anybody need to explain them? Because the fact of the matter is they require no explanation of any kind.

If the lady's naughty but proper
If the lady's chicer than chic
If her escorts must wear a topper
And each man's the man of the week
If she rides around in a brand new foreign car
The chances are, the lady's a star.

If the lady's utterly charming
If the lady's chummy with kings
If her whims are close to alarming
And it's known she's thrown a few things
If they've got a drink with her name in Jilly's Bar
The chances, are the lady's a star.

If her smallest party is really extensive
With tons of expensive caviar.

If the lady is someone with the same credentials
Someone with the same essentials
Someone who is worshipped from afar
She's a genuine, positive, totally, marvelous, perfectly, wonderful
She's a great big, a great big star.

(audience applauds as band begins ''Bridge Over Troubled Water'')

When you're weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all (all)
I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you (ooo)
I'll take your part, oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh, if you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind!

(audience applauds as band plays ''Candida'')

The stars won't come out if they know that you're about
'Cause they couldn't match the glow of your eyes
And, oh, who am I ?
Just an ordinary guy
Tryin' hard to win me first prize

Oh, my Candida
We could make it together
The further from here, girl, the better
Where the air is fresh and clean

Candida
Just take my hand and I'll lead ya
I promise life will be sweeter
'Cause it said so in my dreams

The future looks bright, the gypsy told me so last night
Said she saw our children playing in the sunshine
And there were you and I ... in a house, Baby, no lie
And all these things were yours, just as they were mine

Oh, my Candida
We could make it together
The further from here, girl, the better
Where the air is fresh and clean

Candida
Just take my hand and I'll lead ya
I promise life will be sweeter
'Cause it said so in my dreams

Oh, my Candida
We could make it together
The further from here girl the better
Where the air is fresh and clean

Candida
Just take my hand and I'll lead ya
I promise life will be sweeter
'Cause it said so in my dreams!

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: If you ask where I'm gonna be looking at for this next song, it'll be on you people in the audience.

Whenever skies look grey to me
And trouble begins to brew,
Whenever the Winter winds become too strong,
I concentrate on you.

When fortune cries "Nay! Nay!" to me
And people decare "You're through!",
Whenever the blues become my only song,
I concentrate on you.

On your smile so sweet, so tender,
When at first your kiss I decline.
On the light in your eyes when I surrender,
And once again our arms intertwine;

And so, when wise men say to me
That love's young dream never comes true,
To prove that even wise men can be wrong,
I concentrate on you.

(audience applauds)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: OK now, those of you in the audience who have teenage girls will recognize this next song. Once again, the song that follows this needs no explanation. Gentlemen!

I'm sleeping
And right in the middle of a good dream
like all at once I wake up
From something that keeps knocking at my brain
Before I go insane
I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed
Screaming out the words I dread:
"I think I love you!" (I think I love you)

This morning, I woke up with this feeling
I didn't know how to deal with
And so I just decided to myself
I'd hide it to myself
And never talk about it
And didn't I go and shout it
When you walked into my room.
"I think I love you!" (I think I love you)

I think I love you
So what am I so afraid of?
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of
A love there is no cure for
I think I love you
Isn't that what life is made of?
Though it worries me to say
I've never felt this way

Believe me
You really don't have to worry
I only want to make you happy
And if you say,
hey, go away, I will
But I think better still
I ought to stay around and love you
Do you think I have a case?
Let me ask you to your face:
Do you think you love me?
I think I love you!

I think I love you
So what am I so afraid of?
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of
A love there is no cure for
I think I love you
Isn't that what life is made of?
Though it worries me to say
I've never felt this way
I think I love you!
I think I love you!
I think I love you!

(audience applauds, as band plays ''Bed of Roses'')

She was called a scarlet woman by the people
Who would go to church yet left me in the street
With no parents of my own, I never had a home
And an eighteen year old boy has got to eat

She found me outside one Sunday morning
Taking money from a man I didn't know
She took me in and wiped away my childhood
A woman of the streets this Lady Rose

This bed of roses that I lay on
Where I was taught to be a man
This bed of roses where I'm living
Is the only kind of love I understand

She was a handsome woman just thirty-something
Who was spoken to in town by very few
She managed a late evening business
Like most of the town wished they could do

And I learned all the things that a man should know
From a woman not approved of I suppose
But she died knowing that I really loved her
Off life's bramble bush,I picked a rose

This bed of roses that I lay on
Where I was taught to be a man
This bed of roses where I'm living
Is the only kind of love I understand!

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: One of my favorite artists to listen to is Perry Como, and he made this next song into a really big hit. And once you hear it, you'll understand why.

It's impossible to tell the sun to leave the sky,
It's just impossible.
It's impossible to ask a baby not to cry,
It's just impossible.
Can I hold you closer to me
And not feel you going through me,
But the second that I never think of you
Oh, how impossible.

Can the ocean keep from rushing to the shore
It's just impossible.
If I had you could I ever ask for more
It's just impossible.
And tomorrow, should you ask me for the world
Somehow I'd get it, I would sell my very soul
And not regret it for to live without your love
Is just impossible

Can the ocean keep from rushing to the shore
It's just impossible.
If I had you could I ever ask for more
It's just impossible.
And tomorrow, should you ask me for the world
Somehow I'd get it, I would sell my very soul
And not regret it for to live without your love
Is just impossible
Oh impossible
Impossible.
Impossible.

(audience applauds)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: That's a really great song for me to sing. And now I sing one of the country songs that I helped in part to make into a big popular song hit.

Walk through this world with me, go where I go
Share all my dreams with me, I need you so
In life we search and some of us find
I've looked for you a long, long time

And now that I've found you, new horizons I see
Come take my hand and walk through this world with me

(Instrumental Break)

Walk through this world with me, go where I go
Share all my dreams with me, I need you so
And now that I've found you, new horizons I see
Come take my hand and walk through this world with me

Come take my hand and walk through this world with me.

(audience applauds)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: This next song is one of the many great tunes composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It was written a long time ago but it became a hit song in recent days and months. Here it is.

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of golden starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

Just like me, they long to be
Close to you!

(audience applauds as band plays ''On Days Like These'')
On days like these when skies are blue and fields are green
I look around and think about what might have been
and then I hear sweet music float around my head
as i recall the many things we left unsaid.
And it's on days like these that I remember
singing songs and drinking wine
while your eyes played games with mine.

On days like these I wonder what became of you.
Maybe today you are singing songs with someone new.
I'd like to think you're walking by those willow trees
remembering the lovely youth on days like these.
And it's on days like these that I remember
singing songs and drinking wine
while your eyes played games with mine.

On days like these I wonder what became of you.
Maybe today you are singing songs with someone new.
I'd like to think you're walking by those willow trees
remembering the lovely youth on days like these.
And it's on days like these that I remember
singing songs and drinking wine
while your eyes played games with mine!

(audience applauds)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: My, my, that was quite a long show, wasn't it? Anyways, now's the time I'd like to close it. Here are the songs that are gonna help me do this. Everyone!

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la...
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

And let me just say this:
I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill my share of losing
And now, as tears subside
I find it all so amusing

To think I did all that
And may I say - not in a shy way
Oh no, oh no, not me
I did it my way

For what is a man, what has he got
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
This record shows I took the blows
And did it my way!

(audience applauds)

THUNDERBOLT SENTINEL: Thank you for enjoying this record and this film of which this is a soundtrack. I hope you will see both again any day - or any night - and that you'll join me in all my future recording endeavors. Until then . . . so long!
