OPTIONAL CANON.

Evil begets evil.

While Tirek's reign would end, his evil was a taint that drove many others to evil.

In one case, he enslaved a sentient race of penguins at the South Pole. Deciding to have some fun with them, he chose to send them to die in the desert.

He chose in particular to make an example of their king, tying him up in the blazing sun and allowing it to do him in. The young Prince of the Penguins (disguised as a commoner so as to not be slaughtered with his father and the rest of his family) would see one of his people asked what they had done to warrant this, Tirek's reply was "the poles spend 12 months in the day, more than anywhere else. I consider your kind dwelling there a crime."

When they replied by saying that was unfair, Tirek's reply, in full earshot of the young Prince, was "If you had power, you would decide what is right," then incinerated the penguin. "But I have the power now, so what I say is LAW!"

The few who survived eventually settled at the North Pole, and were left so fearful and hateful of all non-penguins thanks to Tirek's evil actions. The Prince would grow to become King Chalatan, and attempt to plunge the world into an eternal winter to ensure his people would never be threatened by any outside the frozen north, using the sheer hatred Tirek had instilled in his heart to fuel his spell.

Elsewhere, the Purple Mountain King, while good and kind in all things, saw that Tirek would eventually learn of him and the all important Heart Stone he possessed, or the innocent people who had sought refuge on him, and seek them out. To prevent this, with the aid of Moochick and much risk, retrieved a black lava stone from the heart of Hydia's clan's lair in Mount Gloom. Having been imbued by the countless hexing ceremonies with immense power, the piece of obsidian pendent could be used to grant complete invulnerability.

So his Elevated Eminence made a rock elemental to act as a guardian against Tirek, placing the black lava stone in his collar to grant him complete invincibility. But when the attack came, the guardian had to be sent forth before it was given a heart to balance its instincts. The result was a vicious rockdog who sought to turn everything to stone, even if it was not a threat. While Crunch did his duty well, his invincibility and endless stamina a wall against Tirek's hordes, eventually Tirek fell...and Crunch no longer had limitless Reptilians and Stratadons to turn to stone, turning his rage to the innocent.
