Something Wicked This Way Comes · 1:29pm Sep 3rd, 2012
So I finally submitted my last law assignment for the semester (until the exams in November). It's an odd thing to say considering I am about halfway through said semester. Hopefully that will give you some indication of just how big those assignments were (if someone even mentions persona designata or wrongful life, I will probably cry). For the past two weeks I have been arriving at uni at about 9 am, and leaving at about 8pm (on average). Mystic is currently alive on a concoction of willpower and caffeine. Mostly the latter.
So now, with that last assignment out of the way, perhaps I will get a little free time? Ha. Nah. Work! Work, work, work. Nothing has changed. I still don't get home till about 9pm, haha.
But yet, despite everything, stories are coming your way. About a week at the most for one of them, actually. But I will get to that momentarily.
As someone who likes to write, I also love to read. A lot. My obsession with ponies results in the reading of my fair share of fanfiction. There is so much work out there that it is truly mind-boggling. Some of it is unbelievably bad. Most of it is mediocre. And some of it is what I would even hazard at calling 'good'. And then we have the stuff that is just spectacular. While it is a small group, and many people will often disagree as to what stories should go in there, there are some stories that are just a league above and beyond everything else.
I love those stories. While it probably appears to go without saying, I truly do love them. And they never cease to amaze and depress me.
Depress you?! you cry.
Yes. Depress me. Why? Because there are some stories that I read that are just so good, that I cannot help but despair a little knowing that I am so far behind their level of skill that I can really only dream of ever reaching it. Stories like Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying, Background Pony, Project Horizons or Composure force me to get up and walk away in the middle of chapters, because there are moments I just struggle to comprehend how anyone can write that well.
I am improving in my writing. The two stories coming your way shortly are proof of that (in my opinion, at least). But I still have such an unbelievably long way to go that it's not funny. I have dedicated myself almost completely to writing stories since I wrote my first one back in November. I have over 250k words to my name now, and the measure of which I have improved is mind-boggling... And so is the journey I still have left to go.
Those stories are a major source of inspiration for me. I look at those titles and as silly as it must sound, I really want to one day have a story of my own reach towards those lofty heights. Maybe it's foolish. Maybe it's even pointless in the greater scheme of things. But that's ok. Life's too short to not do what you enjoy.
So yeah. Stories coming your way! I have finally nailed that elusive one-shot, and that is the one that is coming first. It's actually almost a spiritual successor to The Sun Whispers Your Name in the sense that it uses a lot of the themes I had in mind when the story was actually still set in Celestia's mind. You will know exactly what I mean when you read it. I hope you have your thinking caps on, though. Psychological mind games/character studies, ahoy! Discord and Celestia going head to head in a titanic struggle of wills is an idea that I have had in my head for months, and I have finally written it. I am happy with how it's turned out, as well, so hopefully you will all enjoy it!
The next story is the long-promised adventure, psuedo-sequel to TSWYN. All I am really waiting on now is cover-art. I have seen thumbnails of it, and oh boy does it look fantastic.
All the best, guys. I hope your enjoying this little of journey of mine half as much as I am. I still have a long way to go, though, so here's to reaching for the stars.

332865 Ah well. There are several things I am addicted to, and spending money is one of them. Feeding the addiction!
332866 Project Horizons Easily my favourite pony story, haha.
And don't worry, I want to do something for my anniversary. Dunno what yet, but we'll see!
And man, I just laugh at that gif. Gummy doing what a Gummy does best: Gummying up the place, haha.

1. This made me feel lazy on an impossible high level. While you are studying 42/7 (nono, that's intended..) I'm lying in the damn sun (or elsewhere) writing ponies on paper. Old-school, yay! Unfortunately, I am too lazy to transfer them to my PC and even too lazy to learn my vocabolaries. (Hey, Tortilla Curtan..Fuck you, I'm too lazy too read you, too.) Did I say that I did sleep the whole damn day? Pff, being nihilistic is really demotivational time to time.
2. No luck-wishes for the anniversary from my lips (fingers.). Totally Overrated.
3. New stories incoming, YAY!
4. Okay, maybe a tiny luck-wish since it's pony related.
5. Hail the rule of 5! Also, I approve you way of thinking when it comes to motivation and target-setting. Becoming a super-awesome-pony-writer is a good point to reach as a writer I guess.
So, yea, greetings to this faithful student who wrote this blog. (Hardcore-study-season Twilight vs. Mystic. Begin!) dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/emoticons/misc_Twilight_crazy_invert.png
Law huh? Pretty cool, pretty cool. Must be just like Law and Order... in every way.
I am more then familiar with the depressionfest that is Background Ponies and Project Horizon (which I am slowly trying to catch up with). I need to read the other two at some point considering they seem interesting.
Yea, I'm trying to start up my own story, and boy, it is quite the time eater if you start to break 3K for a single chapter.
Bah, work, who needs a job?
(I do...)
I'm sure on your commutes to and from uni you saw at least two houses that looked promising, now you just need to case them and find a hefty rock, and you've got it made.
(I suggest you not follow any of that advice)
Anyway, your job can't be as difficult as Law, can it? The hours may be just as long, but at least the mind numbing work will be replaced with something less so. Have fun with your anniversary thing, or whatever -- don't really know what you'd do for it, though, marathon of ponies? Maybe... I'm sure you'll do something fun, you sound like you deserve a break, even if you don't seem to want one.
Oh well, keep on doing what you love, and good luck with all that life
Hehe, if you think Background Pony is good, you should try the phone book that is End of Ponies! Good to hear that uni is going well. Can't wait to see what you've been up to :)
332995 Lying in the sun, writing ponies... Not jealous... No, not at all.
And I'll give Twilight a run for her money! I could make a bookfort from the material I have read/written in the past fortnight, haha. In fact, that gives me an idea...
333023 Every. Single. Way. (Sad moment when I have never seen Law and Order, haha)
333280 Oh yeah. Stories eat up time like... like a person who eats a lot (I dunno, I just woke up. Don't judge me! ) Many a time I have sat down to start writing and look up a good six or so hours later.
333704 No! I would never do such a terrible thing! //Slowly puts down hefty rock...
Nah, my job is a lot easier than law. I sell books! Haha. Yay for casual work in retail. Not sure which is worse though: selling my soul to the studying demons, or dealing with customers.
Pony marathon? I haven't done that in months. So yes, yes I will almost certainly be having a pony marathon, haha.
333735 Oh believe me, EoP is definitely on my gargantuan list of things to read. I think I will probably wait till Background Pony is over and he gets back to working on it before I start reading it, though. I like to read things in one shot if at all possible!
Reading that, sounds like somebody needs to listen to Ira Glass on Storytelling:

It's certainly good advice, certainly makes me feel better.
334283 Wow, that's actually fantastic. I love it, because it really hits the nail on the head.
Huh, actually makes you stop and think. That was awesome; thank you.
