Pony POV Series World Building 101: Dug Too Deep

In the age of Myths, the Kobolds had a well known fondness for jewels. To what degree varied depending on that particular Kobold or clan, but in general they frequented mines in search of new treasures. This is the story of one such mine that's dug up far more than anyone could have bargained for.

A clan of Kobolds happened upon a massive deposit far beyond their wildest dreams. Such was the wealth they uncovered that they soon set up their own city state, a place of fabulous wealth.

They were wise, and realized the dragons may catch wind of their wealth, especially with the advent of Tiamat and Bahamut, so they used their wealth, and a large amount of flattery, to bribe Tiamat for her protection. Tiamat requested regular payments for such a boon to be granted, but with the sheer size of the deposit, they were one of the few societies that could afford it, and their king one of the few with a talent for flattery sufficient.

Their society and mine would become known as a wonder of the ancient world.

For years the Kobolds would prosper, even into the age of Tirek...however...their great wealth and prosperity lead them to become greedy.

The Kobolds dug too greedily and too deep.

Finally, while digging further than even the greediest dragons dared, they breached into a world of fire and lava.

The molten innards...contained far more than just molten rock. It contained an entire world onto itself, only slightly smaller than the surface. With an entire ecosystem of beings who thrived in the intense heat and pressure...and standing atop this molten world, was the King of the Lava Demons.

Lavan had scrapped and crawled his way to the top of the molten underworld. Of all beings in that fiery world, Lavan's strength was unparalleled, and soon, every kingdom and people in the depths bowed before their master...but that was precisely the problem.

Lavan looked on the molten world his people had always known...and was saddened. Not for the evil he had wrought or the pain he had caused, such things had no place in his greedy heart. He was saddened because he had no more worlds to conquer. While he abused and enjoyed his power as any tyrant, with the exception of crushing rebellions, Lavan grew bored with nothing new to conquer or subject.

Only Tirek's greed matched Lavan's lust for power, and Lavan had no more power he could claim he didn't already possess.

That is until the Kolbolds broke through the rocky layer above their heads.

For untold centuries, the Lava Demons had believed the rock above was the sky. while lava would erupt to the surface, none saw such events as any more than natural disasters, as none returned to tell the tale...but now, Lavanrealized that 'sky' was merely a wall between him and another world to conquer.

The Kobolds were terrified when living beings of molten rock emerged into the mines, lead by a giant. Weapons forged for battles on the surface melted against the intense heat of the Lava Demon's bodies. Lavan himself moved like a sapient lava flow through the tunnels, destroying anything he saw as a threat to his power.

Months later, the dragons would come for the city's tribute to Queen Tiamat...and all they found standing in place of the once great city, was a new volcano in its place.

Lavan had been let in...and made himself at home.
