Bonds Beyond Time Review · 7:14am Apr 28th, 2016

OK, so I just watched Yu-Gi-Oh Bonds Beyond Time... again. And I thought I'd give a reveiw.

I loved it.

Yes, the story is convoluted and insane.
Yes, it's a huge cash in that was made just to sell merchandise. ("Gee, I wonder what other show I watch is based on the same principle," she said sarcastically.)
YES! It is fan pandering, pure and simple.

But I, and every other fan who grew up with these shows at the center of their childhood, had a massive hour long fangasm throughout the course of the movie. I don't think I need to explain why: the three main protagonists dueling together is something that everyone wanted, even if they didn't know it. The animation was great as well, it gave a new look to classic characters, like Yugi and Dark Magician.

Oh and Yubel. Yubel Yubel Yubel Yubel Yubel Yubel Yubel. Oh and Yubel was on screen. And they aren't re-drawn to hide their transgender-ness. Have I mentioned Yubel yet? Oh and also, YUBEL!!
Pardon me while I fangasms all over my nightie.

The movie does have some faults that I can't really ignore though. The 10 minute exposition dump at the beginning, while epic, was way too long, and by the end, I was itching to skip to the good stuff.

Another thing that bugged me was that the Protagonists spent half the duel giving each other's ego blowjobs. I'm SURE they could have found another way too stretch out the duel.

*COUGH COUGH* season one finale *COUGH*

but those are just nitpicks, and I really don't have a problem with them. My REAL issue with this movie was the fact that it was a movie that was realised in theaters. It's almost insulting that they choose this as the tenth anniversary film. If they had made it a TV special, or even a one of season of episodes centered around these three, it would have came off as less sleezy, and might have turned out better. Especially since they added those ten minutes of exposition just so they could have it in theatres.

Overall, I give this a 4.5/10. While objectively, this was a horrible mess of a movie, it was an absolute JOY to sit through. The fact that a card game based on a REALLY bad manga could spawn all of this, it's kinda awesome, and in a way, this movie sums up everything good and bad with the game.
