First Impressions: Hooffields and McColts (Ha, Ha, horse puns -_-) · 3:55am Nov 17th, 2015
No, I didn’t forget to do last week’s episode; long story short, I didn’t have much to say about “What About Discord?” so I skipped that first impressions. Now, onto why we’re here.
This episode was definitely… interesting. I’ll admit, I know fuck all about the Hatfields and McCoys, just that they’re apparently fighting over something that one of them did to the other and that the story changes every time it’s told. In any case, this episode was pretty predictable, as the moment they mentioned that the Hooffields are good at growing crops but not building houses (and vice-versa with the McColts), I immediately knew how the story was going to end. I can’t be the only one who saw that ending coming, it’s that cliché. And of course the two families don’t know exactly how the fight between them started, they never do. Whenever these types of stories come up, they always follow the same plot points and a lot of times don’t do anything new with it; even Avatar tried something like this and we all know how that episode turned out. Heck, the only time I’ve seen this done in an interesting and unintentionally funny way was Buster Keaton’s Our Hospitality. In fact, he’s a good version I found on YouTube:
Give it a watch, it’s well worth your time.
Final Thoughts: Pretty predictable episode and you can see every plot point coming (raise your hand if you didn’t immediately pick up that the cake was a Trojan horse… yeah, thought not). I like how the Hooffields and McColts differ in terms of style, not only are they different color pallets (the Hooffields being various shades of bright yellow and orange and the McColts dull greys and purples), but the Hooffields are overall much cleaner than the McColts. In the end, this one was kind of “meh”, although Twilight was definitely the highlight of the episode for me.
‘Til next time folks.
