Ponies for tolerance? · 12:10pm Nov 14th, 2015
Tonight, the world rallies together. Tomorrow, we'll start pulling each other apart in search of someone to blame.
The refugee camp at Calais has already been set ablaze, and I have no doubt that will only be the beginning. We're about to see a wave of violence against Muslims, Sikhs, Syrian refugees, and just about everyone who looks brown. In all honesty, I feel powerless. I don't think there's anything I can do.
But maybe, just maybe, there's something we can do.
A fandom isn't much of a movement, but it's still a unified group, and this one was built first and foremost on loving others even if they're different from you. What if all of us speak out in defense of those who'll be targeted and harassed? What if we support them, and remind them that they're not alone? What if we can stand, if just for a moment, against the same hatred that drove the terrorists in the first place, the self-devouring ouroboros of you are not like me, and that is bad?
I don't know where to start, and I don't know what to do. I'm certainly not going to be leading any movements anytime soon. But I won't just throw up my hands.
Humans are a stubborn lot. They don't like being told they're wrong and refuse to listen to other people's advice unless threatened.
As much as I would love to start something, I can't see it accomplishing anything.
