I am evidently doing something wrong on FimFiction because stories about incest keep appearing in my feed, or otherwise coming to my attention. I need to find some way to stop this.
This has lead me to ask myself a question.
WHY?!
Why the hell would anyone write this? I know that some people have an interest in Clop, but why would anyone decide that the fic should be about siblings? Incest is bad! It's gross. It's unhealthy. It's commonly considered to be wrong, and with good reason. The majority of wildlife and nature goes out of it's way to explicitly avoid incest?
So, why does is seem that Fimfiction users like it? Is it a fetish? Does it somehow make the stories more erotic? Do they like it simply because it's taboo? Does actually seem like Twilight and Shining Armor would make a good pair, or that the Apple family should have creepy, sexual traditions, or that someone's parent should be the one to give them their first sexual experience? What could possibly account for the unusually high number of pony-smut that contains incest?
Because I'm starting to actually consider trying to consider trying to put bleach on my eyes and/or brain!

personally speaking, I'm comfortable enough with most content, most fandoms tend to have an adult side. I discovered as such in previous fandoms, and by now very little surprises me to be honest.
But even with a neurological condition that means I'm unfazed by explicit content, be it sexual or violence, I find the sheer level of incest fics off putting. I don't think it's sexy in the slightest, in fact I find it grosses me out. Which is saying something!
It bugs me that I see people getting abuse for choosing odd pairings, see stories being lambasted because they're not a popular setup, yet Twilight sleeping with her brother is an instant win!
Way to go, fandom!
It's true theres a big allure in taboo subjects, and you're quite right in guessing that some people find it erotic. Defying convention and common decency clearly excites a lot of people. The idea that they're into something that carries a stigma in a lot of people's minds is probably what fuels it. It's similar to how highly contested or banned video games experience a spike in popularity because the controversy incites curiosity. Some publishers even deliberately stir up a storm to get more sales! Shock value is a popular hook. Look at the GTA games, for instance.
Are you subscribed to any groups that allow clop fics in their folders? I've joined groups that keep a separate NSFW folder for that kind of content, even when they normally specialise in safer fanfics. That could be the cause for it appearing in your feeds...
3542174 I try not to join groups that include clop, but some of them may. I usually avoid clop like the plague, but I don't like to dislike something without reading it, and I always try to give feedback to people when they ask for it.
And what some people write is just a whole new level of squick.
