Right now, Las Vegas is in a torrential rainstorm. I'd even call it biblical, if it actually kept up that long.
I just walked down to the store. I don't even remember what I bought (Chips, I bought two bags of chips.) because it wasn't about the food. It was about the walk. All around me, it's pouring buckets of rain, each raindrop the size of a mouse and smacking into the pavement with the force of a tiny meteorite. Lightning's coming down, lighting up the sky around in all directions, and it could hit me and my umbrella too at any moment.
And it's wonderful.
The noise, too. Rain spattering across my umbrella, slopping around my bowler hat, the puddles splashing as I walk through them in my boots. Even now, the storm just got a little more intense, and I can hear it hailing against my window, my roof, draining out the gutters. I'm sopping wet—not just from the rain, but from the sweat too, but I'm all warm and toasty, while listening to the rain.
Vegas doesn't get many days like this. Maybe one really good storm ever year or two. Every single other day, it's dry, blistering, sunlit heat. The sidewalks are hotter than fire, and you could literally cook an egg on a car's hood.
And it shows, out there. There's massive drainage trenches leading right past my apartment, empty every single day of the year except for days like this, when there's a three-foot-tall raging river flowing through it all, washing away all the filth and dirt and dust down there. The streets are flooding—I've seen smaller creeks than the gutter full of water I just walked through.
I love this weather.
