It's not really expensive. SL is free, and most of what you see cost me ~US $5 combined plus some minor technical skills. The humanoid one was "expensive" (we're talking maybe US $15-20 total that someone spent on me as a gift), but pony stuff is pretty cheap in general.
And a fair bit of what you see is free.
