    Drabble

Pegasi had a belief. It gave way to tradition, then superstition, and finally to aphorism, but it grain of truth in it persists. That you can tell all you need about someone by the sound of their wings.

Why is there no Changeling story called...

    "All Love Is Unrequited?"

Anyway, it's been a while since I made a blog post for...various life reasons. This is mostly to check in and prove that I am not actually dead. Also that I have written some 25k words of original sci-fi in a month. I am hoping I can keep this up! And give you all a story with jovial insect aliens, sassy AIs, and a mystery.

Original fic is hard. Also, I'm not dead. · 3:44am Sep 4th, 2015

Okay, I'm done complaining.

I don't have any pony words for you people, so have some questions instead. I can't promise they'll amount to anything but I still want to know.

What race do you think needs an entry in the Apotheverse other than Changelings? Yes, they've got a reserved slot, it just won't be anytime soon.

Is there a minor character who needs to be revisited?

I think there's a lot to be done with minotaurs. Trolls too for that matter.

As far as minor characters from your world; I'd like to see the fall of the Flutter ponies, and the rise of Queen Chrysalis.

3368210 Hey, I already said the changelings (and therefore, Chrysalis) was on the slate. Though I don't know how much of the past I'll manage to cover with it.
Why minotaurs? And I'm not even familiar with trolls...

Sea Ponys and the city of Marelantis?

Revisit "the island." Might be interesting to see what tragedy befell that place and how the spirit came to be how it is. The animals, too. Perhaps a creepy one-shot dedicated to this place for Hallowe'en?

General, they're an excuse to drag some glorified Greek culture into the story. They offer a contrast to ponies' herd mentality, being more insular creatures.

Here's my head canon on them:
Minotaurs have a lot of gravitas. They're an old culture, older than Equestria. Not a warrior culture, but sees fighting as a necessary art. They have a strong sense of personal responsibility, and are proud of their past, with long memories rooted in ancient writings. They see ponies as flighty, hive-minded, and generally dangerous. Their area a few places where ponies and minotaurs mix, and these tend to be very strong, if not insular, communities.

Trolls are useful, simply for how much of a blank slate they are. One could make any story to fit them .

Hmm... wasn't thinking changeling's when I mentioned Chrysalis.
In that case, I'd like to hear more about the persimmon farm. I thought enough of it, to use it in a story I published a few weeks ago.

3368287 Honestly I hadn't much thought about sea ponies. I'm not sure to what degree they'd even exist in the Apotheverse, in the sense of serving a distinct role in the universe.

3368290 I've actually considered doing a Lost Cities entry for that plus the under-glacier city RD&FS visit. They're both part of the story of the mušḫuššu, who predate, uh, most everyone else.

3368290

You have my vote.

3368294 I could see that. Sort of existing in a space between Buffalo and Gryphon type cultures.

And Cantrot? Well, Cantrot is creepy as hell and uh, yeah that's about all I know. It's a Lotus Eater Machine that smells of persimmons and is run by ghosts. Well, was. We know that it got burned long and long ago, by dragons - long enough that no records survive of its existence. Beyond that, well.

Edit: Oh and get this, persimmons are of family "Diospyros," which means "fruit of god" but can also be translated as "god's fire."

Kirin, maybe?

kirin yes definitely maybe Celestia, Twilight and Luna can go on a diplomatic mission to neighpone home of the kirin.

Griffins wouldn't be bad. They're probably the non-pony race we see the most in the show but we get very little of their culture there.

Let's see more of Tozómuc's race / species / people, even if it's just a Lost Cities entry. It's rare to see ponyfic explore a Meso-American setting outside of Daring Do and Ahuizotl.

Needs more donkeys. Ooh, or Yaks!

3368376 3368435 Hmm. Kirin are often classed as dragon-pony hybrids, though that's not accurate in a mythological sense. I'd have to figure out their origins - whether they're related at all or a completely independent species.

There's also the flavor to consider. Are they a thriving civilization of mystical ponies or a small handful of immortal sages? Going by the legends, it'd be perfectly appropriate to consider them, collectively, to be the god of whatever species - perhaps the Guizhou ponies (considering that kirin are Chinese, not Japanese, in origin), or more likely something different. Say, water deer. Since they have tusks and thus would be very far from our base pony frame.

3368661 You...you do realize I have an entire story about that, right?

3368756 Basilisks! Tozo's desert almost could be a Lost Cities entry. Basilisks themselves would be more along the lines of the Draconequus - a one-off (or very rare)...monster. I'm not much for the chicken-like cockatrice sort of interpretation, clearly, but I take basilisks at their worst. They blight they ground they walk on, their gaze kills, their very presence is inimical to life. So making one into a person is tricky business.

3368787
True, he might have been a one-off. Still, he may have had worshipers who venerated him for some of his abilities ("Blight the lands of our enemies in Tozómuc's name!") or maybe they placated him with sacrifices to avoid his attention moreso than attracting it. So even if he were a singular being, perhaps there's room to explore the civilization that spawned or (perhaps unwillingly) hosted him.

Imagine a clutch of Yuan-Ti worshiping him, deep in some blood-soaked temple in an impenetrable jungle, or an apocalypse cult who summoned him to...

OK, now we're back to Daring Do, maybe.

originally they come from chinese ancestry, they were dragon-pony hybrids thought to bring peace and prosperity, and where very rare (so I guess on the level of alicorns). If I remember correctly the japanese imported it like they did with so many other chinese things like kanji. kirin is the japanese version in china it's called qilin.
In the Post-Qin Chinese hierarchy of mythological animals, the qilin is ranked as the third most powerful creature (after the dragon and phoenix), but in Japan, the kirin occupies the top spot. This is following the style of the ancient Chinese, as qilin was ranked higher than the dragon or phoenix before the Qin dynasty. During the Zhou dynasty, the qilin was ranked the highest, the phoenix ranked second, and the dragon the third.

Whoops. Forgot Cartography of War was part of the Apotheosis-verse (and written by you).

Chimeras would be a good species to investigate, as well as the manticores, and the basilisks. These mythical mish-mashed creatures must have a reason, yes? I don't remember if Discord was included in this universe at all, but a spirit comprised of a dozen different parts must have a hand (talon? paw?) in their creation.

3374278 That's actually directly part of my canon. You can see references to it in Cartography and Apotheosis.

Discord broke the world. The royal sisters (and the other extant gods) spent centuries cleaning it up, as well as taking care of the worst of the monsters created by Discord's influence or direct intent.
