I have also had a soft spot for these guys. Only cause you don't them killing us! The very heart, soul and powerhouse of Chrysalis, admit it Chrysy you would be lost without them! I admit nothing!!! Either way, the Changelings have been pretty much sidelined in the MLP show which might mean that there is room for a return. (Especially with the IDW comics finishing their bit.)

An Alternate Path
Most changelings are seen as drones, simple soldiers to do as they are bidden. For many of them, this could very well be true. However, if they prove themselves trustworthy, they can gain some semblance of independence.
Gel is one such changeling.
She has risen through the ranks enough to be able to request her own assignments. She chooses one no changeling has tried before: Ponyville. Her reasons are sound, after all, a particular group of mares resides in the town. These mares are well known for saving Equestria many times, so it is wise to have an agent within their proximity. However... motivations are not always as clear cut as one would say to others.
And if her motivations for going in the first place are to be questioned... perhaps there is something more to her reason for the specific target she requested?

Did you ever wish your dog or cat could understand you? Chrysalis has. Chrysalis has wished for so long for her changelings to understand anything other than "Bark!", "Hiss!", or "Head to the area exactly 3.7 miles north and 2 miles east of me and attack anypony that moves."
Well, after gathering enough love from Canterlot, she finally got her wish. But these newly awakened intelligences had to come from somewhere.

It's been months since the invasion of Canterlot. Chrysalis has been overthrown. The changelings are free from her rule. But when Celestia and Luna decree that they favor the integration of their species, many changelings learn the true nature of some ponies, as ponies learn the true nature of their own kind.
A story about standing up for yourself as much as anyone else. A tale of finding strength within yourself and using it to overcome adversity. A series of events that lead to friendship, and sometimes love, when you fight for a cause you believe in.

Integrating the Changeling race into Equestria, easier said than done right?
