You know, I've seen this theory around, and I personally don't think it makes sense. I mean, Starswirl is too level-headed to be as chaotic as Discord, and I feel like Celestia would not have been nearly as hostile to Discord when he appeared again if this were the case. Just my thoughts.

My thesis has to do with his last unfinished spell (the one twilight finishes to become alicorn ) since he himself did not have friends would it not have mixed up himself (assuming he cast the spell alone ) wouldn't the shock of being turned into a draconequuis be enough to drive someone crazy in a sense chaotic?

And on the note of Celestia being hostile might hold ground assuming she knew nothing of his origins ...
I've also gathered that starswirl disappeared around the same time as discords first appearance ( before nightmare moon) granted discords version of chaos is mostly childish (similar to someone who would of had repressed foalhood ) I mean , .. chocolate rain ? Cotton candy clouds ? this along with discords initial trust issues a prime example of antisocial behavior ... The more I think about it the more it makes sense....
