On August the 5th, 1945 at 23:45 GMT- the bomb at Hiroshima detonated.
The debate about the use of the two nuclear bombs are still ongoing (thankfully moving away from the ridiculous notion the US had no other option)
and will likely never end.
What we need to remember, while the losses were high, they were on par with a normal bombing raids on Japanese civilian cities bombed by the US & USSR. The slow death of thousands however, was brutal and painful in their last days (some weeks) due to radiation poisoning.
Just a reminder, the Fourth Article of the Geneva Convention adopted in 1947 deemed deliberate attacks upon civilian populations were classed as a war crime. While this article came in the post war period, it was based on the Hague Conventions (1899, 1907) which included laws for protecting civilian populations from being attacked.
