"On second thought, let us NOT go to Canterlot, it is a silly place." -Rarity, after realizing her invitation was to a party hosted by Prince Blueblood.
Some of my favorite stories I have read on this site are ones that take the fantasy setting of MLP, and crank it up to 11. Stories like It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door, Through the Well of Pirene, and Upheaval:Breaking Point are examples of writing that I think would be right at home amidst the likes of Tolkien, CS Lewis, or Brian Jacques. They inspire me to craft my own sweeping epic of swords and sorcery, damsels and heroes, daring adventure and last minute escapes! Or they would, if I didn't already have three stories unfinished.
King Arthur in Canterlot
Nearly everyone knows the legends of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and how they brought peace to to Britain and built fair Camelot. Just as many likely know the tale of how Arthur was mortally wounded in battle with the traitor Mordred, and was carried off to the mystical Isle of Avalon to have his wounds tended, and it is from there (so the legends say) that he will return to lead his people to victory against their enemies.
It has been thousands of years since that far-off time of chivalry and knighthood. Nations have risen to glory and fallen in flame, wars spanning the globe have been waged, and millions have perished from war, pestilence, and famine. Finally, in just one day of madness, the nations of the world destroyed themselves in a final exchange of radiation and fire. With man and his technology driven to near extinction, the world of magic once more takes it's place. Griffons, Minotaurs, Dragons, Unicorns, Pegasi and many other fantastic creatures rise to form new nations on the continents that were once collectively known as North and South America.
Meanwhile, across the great dark Eastern Sea, the old nations of Europe contain the last remnants of humanity. On the mainland, generations of irradiation and mutation has given rise to what are now known as Trolls, Ogres, Goblins, and Orcs who hunt the last pure-blooded humans out of a vague sense of rage for unknown slights. Years of war have led to the humans being forced from the mainland onto the island that was once known as Britain. The great wizard Merlin, who has survived the eons in various guises (such as a raven, or most recently a white bearded unicorn with a fondness for bells) has returned home to lead his people in resistance to the dark forces that threaten to destroy them. As all seems lost, Arthur finally returns, and leads the humans of Britain to victory against the first wave of goblins. Realizing that it will only be a matter of time before Britain falls, Merlin persuades Arthur to seek allies across the sea, in a gleaming city with a familiar name... Canterlot.
