Princess Celestia sat grimly on her thrown, thoughts jumbled and confused as she stared down on a single piece of paper.
Elements of Harmony
She grimaced, remembering why she was making this sacrifice. Luna had been banished many decades ago, and only a few moons remained before she would have to face her again. But did she want to?
Princess Celestia sighed, dropping her head. She couldn't, that was the problem. The Elements had been lost from her control after her sister's banishment, leaving the princes to find new holders. It had taken many moons of work, but she had found a select few that fit the call:
Loyalty: Rainbow Dash
She had whitnessed the Rainboom. The flow of intertwining colors which was released as a sonic boom. Never before had she beheld a pegasus of her age preform such a stunt, all while earning their cutie mark. She was surprised when she realized it was all started when a group of bullies had made fun of her friend, Gilda.
Princess Celestia didn't have second thought before she remembered the name. Loyalty like hers was created not to be surpassed or forgotten, and over the years she kept a watchful eye, smiling as the pegasus continued to work with her element.
Generosity: Rarity Belle
She had been the hardest to decipher. The filly had been a born fashionista, working with sewing dresses and small costumes most of her young life. But Princess Celestia never saw her act in any outbound way.
Until that special show. She was already on her way to the show when she spotted the unicorn, horn ablaze with ocean blue magic. She appeared to have no idea of her predicament. But Celestia understood and followed, grinning as she saw Rarity earn her unique mark. The gems inside the boulder had sparkled and gleamed.
And Princess Celestia kept that name ever since she watched the filly give all of them away, just to make the show a success. It was a true mark of Generous.
Laughter: Pinkamena Diane Pie
She always held a soft spot for that element. It was the first she had discovered for herself, and kept it the dearest to her heart.
Never before had joy erupted in her body like the time she was told of a young filly named Pinkie Pie, who enjoyed the life of making parties for all her friends. She always saw the faces of happy fillies and colts, never once a sad frown would be left when Pinkie had been there.
Laughter: she knew it was destiny the filly had been chosen for that element. And she was always sure it would never disappear.
But the others left her on edge. No fillies of Colts demonstrated the use to those. She had personally instructed for Canterlot to have an opening to their institution to find the Element of Magic.
Nothing.
The paper flew off the table, Princess Celestia barely noticing as she levitated over a small book, wrapped in dust. She coughed as she dusted it away. A Hearthswarming Tale.
"There were others?"
"Yes, Tia. I, alone with the other leaders, all had assistants, who we trusted with every inch of our heart...most of the time."
"But what happened to them, Princess? Shouldn't they be here?"
"I...will tell you. But you must promise to keep this a secret, unless it is dire."
"I promise, Princess Platinum."
"Very good. Our friends, they had been cursed by the Windigos without knowing. My assistant, Clover the Clever, had a mentor, who went by the name of Starswirl the Bearded. He discovered the curse when it was far too late."
"What happened?"
"They were all encased in everlasting blocks of ice, never to see daylight again."
"Couldn't you have just broken the magic keeping the ice frozen?"
"No, dearest. Not even our magic could penetrate it. It shall have to be an untold power, with even enough magic to stand against the Windigos."
"Didn't we defeat them?"
"Yes, but no one knows how to harness that energy, since it faded to quickly for us to study."
Was that why the element's hosts were not here? They had never been in the first place? If she could not harness, then who would? Would Nightmare Moon take contr-
"Princess Celestia!"
The Alicorn propped her head up, staring at the guard, confused. "Yes?" She asked. The guard tipped his hat. "I'm sorry Princess, you were not moving. We had become worried." Princess Celestia sighed, smiling in an act of comfort.
"I am perfectly fine, but I do have a mission for you group."
The guard looked up. "Yes?"
Princess Celestia stared down at the note on the floor, eyeing the names. "Please," her voice came out as a strangled whisper. "find the names on this document," the colt caught the paper in his hoof.
"and bring them here immediately."
