Whenever someone leaves me a negative comment on a shipping fic I automatically just want to write Discord and Fluttershy as friends.
I mean, yes, they are friends even if I do add romance, but I mean writing them as just friends.
Because I get so very tired of people telling what I can and can't do with characters in a story I'M writing.
A suggested response to detractors:
It's quite possible that they could remain "just friends" forever (until one of them dies). Just because in the Shadow Wars Storyverse they wind up married (well, mated to the extent that everyone basically perceives them as married) doesn't mean that it's the only possible outcome. I do think it's quite likely that they'll remain friends forever (whether or not they become lovers), because their friendship has been very sorely tested -- and survived.
God, I know that feeling too well...
If someone doesn't like Fluttercord and the comment on it, and then you wanna make a friendship fic between them, then...that's cool. Because if inspiration strikes you, you should follow through with it. But otherwise, just ignore it. They can't control who you ship, nor should you change what you're shipping to please someone.
That's...that's all the advice I have to give
3224914 All the agreement in existence, even if MY primary Discord ship is Twilight that does not in any way reduce the validity of YOUR ship (and the good ship Fluttercord is a mighty fine ship). A writer should follow his/her/its/ muse.

Exactly. Their friendship is pretty solid, even if Discord worries that it's not. So, if it can survive Discord's betrayal through Tirek, then it can survive Fluttershy having a boyfriend that isn't Discord. Yet somehow one of these is worse than the other, and (spoilers!) it's the wrong one.
In some people's eyes, Discord can get away with anything and Fluttershy is still expected to love him. But if Fluttershy does anything even remotely that might hurt Discord's feelings, then she is seen as Evil. I'm. So. Tired. Of. It.

It's not that they don't like Fluttercord (though I have had comments telling me they hate the ship as well.) It's Fluttercord shippers that get angry when the plot isn't a completely linear stretch from Discord to Fluttershy. I don't like writing stories where everyone just falls into each other's arms and everything is hunky dory. I like to make the characters work for it, and that means conflict. There are plenty of Fluttercord stories where it's a linear stretch and Discord and Fluttershy love each other and nothing bad happens. I resent being told I have to write another one of them and things are going OOC just because Fluttershy has another suitor.

I like Twicord too. Heck, I have no problem with any ship if it's well written. I don't understand why people get so worked up about this stuff.

Double standards, my friend. Girls are sluts if they sleep with anyone other than you. Guys are just being guys.

Basically, the point of Divine Jealousy and the Voice of Reason -- at his most angry at the situation, Discord can't directly hurt Fluttershy, for the exact same reason he couldn't directly harm the Sisters 2500 years ago. He cares too much. And trying to indirectly harm his friends was the precise mistake he made 2500 years ago, which led to 1000 years of fighting against his friends, followed by 1500 years in stone (largely because he couldn't bring himself to directly attack them).
3224983 I ship pretty much any ship. I just have some that I really like to mess around with

Yeah my version of Discord would never deliberately hurt Fluttershy either, at least not post-Tirek Discord. However, he still doesn't get that he needs to be courteous to those around him.
Hmmm, interesting. In this story Celestia and Discord also have a past, but the mistake Discord makes is a bit different.
