I'm lying in bed suffering from med withdrawal since I stupidly forgot to take my Venlafaxine this morning (you Americans know this drug as Effexor). I've taken it now but I still have that icky withdrawal feeling where my head feels electric-shocky and like it's being drained of nutrients and I have to go to the bathroom often.
Been trying to write but in this state I've managed about 100 words in an hour, so I just gave up. It requires too much imaginative brainpower right now, and I think my brain is still trying to get those nutrients back.
Instead I'll take this opportunity to do what I do best: rant from the comfort of my bed. *shakes cane*
The rather awesome MissyAngel posted this in the Fluttershy group and lo and behold, someone waltzes in and calls Fluttershy a bitch.
You know, I wish I could say this was an isolated incident, but I've seen it pretty often, and it got me thinking about how much I despise Human in Equestria fics. The thing about HiE fics (I mean aside from the fact that they are obvious self-indulgent wish-fulfillment and aren't even trying to disguise that) is that I've noticed that Fluttershy is often portrayed as said human's girlfriend or primary girl (because of course our hero is shagging all of them and they're all throwing themselves at him). What bugs me about this is Fluttershy is ALWAYS portrayed as a one-dimensional perfect waifu. In short, she's unquestioning, naive and mostly there to make the hero happy while looking beautiful. Her flaws and character development are shoved under the bed while her shyness and beauty are ramped up to eleven.
Of course, Fluttershy is shy and beautiful, but my point is that isn't ALL she is and I think a lot of bronies can't handle the fact that Fluttershy is being portrayed like a real woman with her own autonomy and thoughts and feelings. Everytime Fluttershy sticks up for herself in canon I inevitably come across a post on either this site or another describing her behaviour as "bitchy."
Women are allowed to get angry. Women are especially allowed to get angry when people try to take advantage of them, and since Fluttershy is beautiful and small and percieved as a pushover, people will try to take advantage. Of course, said people are always shocked when a woman who is percieved as easy prey shows that she is anything but, and that's when people try to reassert power by calling a woman a "bitch."
As much as bronies like to scream otherwise, this is a show for little girls. Teaching them that they don't have to be prey or put up with bad behaviour from people around them is an awesome message and one I wish I had heard more often as a little girl. Maybe I wouldn't have had so much shit happen to me if I had.
Yeah, we all get it, Mr. Archetypal Human in Equestria. You're the perfect man and so nice and of course Stepford Fluttershy is supposed to love you and if she yells at you to assert herself when you try to do something skeevy then it must be because she's "not herself" and is becoming some kind of "shrill harpy."
Geeze. At least Discord actually loves Fluttershy for who she is.
