Why I stopped writing DotS · 6:00am Jun 19th, 2015
So...some of you may have noticed that Dreams of the Sky went on hiatus. I have no idea how long that hiatus will last, meaning it's basically on pause until I decide to pick it up again. And here's why:
At the start of this year, I was writing no less than ten stories simultaneously, each novel-length or longer. By the end of the year, I was up to fourteen, and my grades were starting to take a hit. This is on top of the fact that one of my stories (not a FiMfic) has weekly updates, meaning I have to keep writing it even if I have little to no inspiration. Add a D&D campaign on top of that, which also had weekly sessions I had to prepare for, and a part-time job, classes, and volunteering at a local middle school, and you have a recipe for disaster. Something had to change. So I decided to put some of my stories on hold, cutting the number of stories I'm actually writing from fourteen to six (which includes the aforementioned D&D campaign). Still a lot, but certainly manageable.
Now, why was DotS cut, while others weren't? The answer is simple: a lack of inspiration.
That's not to say I didn't like DotS; it always has been one of my favorite story concepts, and I'll most definitely be returning to it once my life calms down some. However, it's one of my favorites for chapters that happen much later in the story, and as time went on, I found my self increasingly frustrated with trying to power through the earlier chapters to get to the ones that actually made me excited for this story. And with the other story that had weekly updates, I just didn't have the effort left over or hours in the day to try and power through this particular brick wall.
With all that said, summer quarter this year looks to be nicer than the rest. I'm only taking two classes instead of the usual three, and there's no middle school to occupy my time. So we'll see if I'm able to come back to it these next few months. In the meantime, I will do my best to keep up with UM16, as well as a new FiMfic that I've been toying around with (though I won't post it until I have several chapters ready). But DotS will, sadly, be put on hold until such a time as I can write it more easily or I have more time to try.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy what I can get done.
