..Is I notice so many people draw him with horns. Now, to me this feels wrong. I'm not saying anyone else's interpretation of it is wrong, I'm just saying if I draw him, it feels wrong because I'm a biologist, and horns and antlers are secondary sexual characteristics. They wouldn't come in until puberty.
Yeah I know, I know. Foals in Equestria have horns when before they hit puberty, but the horn of a unicorn seems to be more for magic than anything else (plus both male and female unicorns have them), whereas Discord doesn't ever seem to use his horns for anything magical. I even wonder if draconequui females would have them. Are they to impress the ladyfolk or has that gone away to become something vestigial?
Ponies wouldn't see them as an attractive thing, but other members of Discord's species (if there are any) might.
Anyway, here's how I picture lil' Discord. And yeah, that's my hamfisted attempt at alarajroger's Little Sister doll from her story The Last Draconequus.

Interesting... This is actually making me think again (an activitt I oh so love to do from time to time). First we have to look at the draconequus family especially at the subsection of Draconequus Chaotica a genom associated with Discord. We must look at several factors but the one I want to focus on are reproduction and fiziology. If the antlers were present from birth it would give Discord to be a closer relative to dragons than ponies (considering that live birth is highly unlikelt. due to the horns structure). The function of the horns (as you presumed correctly) is most likely just for show but perhaps it could be used to differenciate the Chaotica genom from other Draconequui. Now the fact still remains that Discord's entire body is a jumble of different parts fused together into one oddly harmonic body (it has a recognizable shape and it seems to function rather well) and yet it looks so disjointed to the untrained eye (maybe Discord i actually controled chaos, controled by others that is). Anywhom this was interesting. You proposed quite a complexing issue here. My hat goes off to you!
P.s. I am also attempting to be a biologist but my field of expertise is microbiology

I kind of wonder that if his species does have a latin name, it is merely the word draconequus split into genus and species, i.e. Draco equus. Literally "Dragon Horse." And did they evolve from matings between dragons and ponies, or are they simply something that developed seperately? It implies that dragons and equines are closely related and why there seems to be interspecies attraction.
And would all draconequui be mismatched like him, or would they just be made up of dragons and equines?
I wonder if dragons would have horns as babies too. Spike doesn't.

Well my theory is that Discord (as a God of Chaos) has adapted the shape of a draconequus as the 'perfect' being considering his body is pretty much organized chaos incarnate. As for the draconequus species it's highly possible considering the fact that Spike in the show has shown clear romantic interest in Rarity. The draconequui are probably different. It depends first on the specie of the dragon that crossbread with one of the four races. I assume the draconequui from pony-dragon crossbreading would differ a lot from draconequui hybrids between unicorn-dragon. Again this is all a theory but that's what I would assume.
Now for your other question, I don't think all draconequui are as 'mismatched' as Discord. Depending on the dominant gene they would either take a more ponified look or a more draconian look. Dragons and ponies seem to be both sentient beings so it's not an impossibility although it would spark a lot of controversy for both species.
Hmmm... again I assume it depends on what subspecies of dragons they are (i.e. in my headcannon there are dragons you see in the show and dragons known as the Orienthus Drakonia which differ in both appearance and behavior). Perhaps you might want to look in to that i.imgur.com/C0SC5BY.gif
I had never thought of that, and it's a good point. It doesn't affect my fic, though, because my draconequui were chimeras specifically of unicorns and Eastern dragons, and Discord was altered by chaos; he was born with a unicorn horn, and it altered. We've seen Tirek cast magic both with his horns and with his hands, so having a magical horn wouldn't prevent a creature from also being able to use their paws to channel magic, necessarily. And then Discord's body was warped into a mishmash by his exposure to an enormous amount of energy being channeled through a broken ritual -- which in my headcanon translates to pure chaos magic, released from constraint. His horns were probably a whole lot smaller when he was little, but I did say that he had them.
BTW, the picture of Little Sister is totally adorbs. She looks as haphazardly stitched as she's supposed to be. (Little Discord was almost certainly not better at sewing than I am. :-))

They would definitely have Eastern dragon in them if they were chimeras. Discord absolutely fits the description of a Chinese dragon, only perhaps a little less symmetrical. I've gone the other route and made Discord one of the first "experiments" nature made--therefore though he has "the paw of a lion, and the talon of an eagle", it's more like the Lion has Discord paws and the Eagle has Discord talons, mainly because he's vain and since he is partly nature's assistant, he'll happily make things partly in his own image.
I completely forgot about Tirek's horns, which is another good point.
I'm so glad you like it. I might colour it later. Ha, I'm not good at sewing either- at least at tightening up my stitches.
