    Happy Holidays

    This is your yearly reminder that I wrote a decently funny Christmas story in the long-ago times. If you haven't read it, you should! If you have read it, maybe you should just stick with blurred memories of how good it was.

    Books!

    So, due to my high level connections here and there, I now have an advance copy of several highly sought after ponyfic books. Now that I've had a chance to check several of them out in person, I have to say that Ponyfeather Publishing does excellent work. Anyone able to pick one up, at Bronycon or ordering them afterward, should totally do so.

    So, I've actually been posting on my primary blog lately. Which has been nice, given that I've pulled myself out of depression enough to actually do stuff like that. So, here's been my daily content over there:

Decently written, fairly disturbing premise, but it felt kind of flat to me. Might just be that I don’t find that particular situation as horrifying as some other people do, so it didn’t manage to have as big an emotional impact on me that it was aiming for. Also doesn’t feel really pony. I have a hard time picturing Princess Celestia even experimenting with what we see in this story.

The New Friends by Fryguy

Very badly written. Halfway through I suspected this was a crackfic or trollfic, but I’m fairly sure that it’s just some inexperienced author who simply has few writing skills. To use an analogy: this story is a ten year old describing a movie he saw once.

A well executed look at what it might have been like for Cadance right after her ascension. Some of it is a bit on the mean side for pony, but not to a dealbreaking degree. All in all, a good story. Even though I perfer Skywriter’s Cadance mythos, I would highly recommend this one. Also doubles as minor commentary on the reaction to Cadance’s appearance from some parts of the fandom, or so it seemed to me.

Fallout: Equestria - Aegis by PresentPerfect

This was pretty good. I’d certainly recommend it. If you like post-apocalyptic stories this is right up your alley. My one teeny tiny nitpick is that it didn’t feel like a fallout story to me. It could have been any generic post-apocalyptic world. It was too short to do anything elaborate with worldbuilding, but it was missing the feeling of living in the shadows of the past that fallout has. Not on a personal level, the main character’s past and personality are wonderfully expressed and shown. I mean on a bigger sense. I don’t think there was a single reference to the old world, the war, or the day it was all destroyed. It’s almost like the author just wanted to tell a good story (success!) instead of slavishly clinging to the minor details of the Fallout: Equestria source material.

This is a example of proper pony fan fiction. Sweet, cute, no real villain or badness. Just simple situation, interesting characters, and misunderstanding leading to strong conflicting emotions. I wouldn’t mind reading more about the characters introduced in this story and how they become a part of Ponyville. If you enjoy slice of life stories at all, you should check this one out.

As always, The Big Master Review List is here: { THE MASTER LIST }
If you know of a text-format reviewer I'm not keeping track of, please let me know and I'll see if they meet the criteria to be assimilated into the list.

If you are an author who wants a more detailed review of a story I've covered feel free to message me. My reviews tend to be fairly light, mostly just reactions to a story right after reading it. I am happy to give a more careful read and reply to anyone who wants more precision and/or feedback.
