Shining Armor saw Chrysalis stop walking out of the corner of his eye. Turning around, she was staring at the path, her ears pinned to her head, which was dropping, her half opened eyes looked pained. She took his hoof in her own.
"Shining..." she began slowly. "I need you to step out of love with me. It's not fair to you, and it hurts us both. You have loved me so much, for so long. You are the best thing to happen to my people, the very best to ever happen to me! I love you so very much, but not eros. I do not love you the way you love me, and it breaks my heart."
"Chrysalis-" Shining tried interrupting.
"Let me finish Shining! This is hard enough as it is. I don't love you, and I have tried so hard to. I have tried falling in love with you, I have want to want you, but it's just not there. I can't do it. You deserve a mare who returns your love in equal measure, who can't wait to see you again, just to be with you. And it's not me Shining. I can't love you like that and it feels like I'm failing you as a friend and admirer."
Shining saw the worry etched on her face, the tears welling in her eyes. "I see exactly what your wife will see in you. I know getting your attention in a feat mares should dream of. And how you feel about me...No-one has ever complimented me so graciously and with such sincerity, and it's repeated every time you look at me. I can never repay you for what you want to give me, and I hope you can forgive me for that.
She swallowed and took a deep breath as tears rolled down her cheeks. "I...I refuse to wrong you Shining. And that's why I need you to stop loving me. If I can't return it, then we are hurting ourselves and each other more, and that's not what friends do. I am so sorry it has to come to this. You are my very...The greatest friend I could ever ask for. And I think that is all we will ever be. Sounds above knows, but I can't hurt you anymore, and you the only one who can change this." She finished her speech by kissing him on a tear soaked cheek of his own.
Both Changeling and unicorn stood in the middle of the snowy park, holding hooves, weeping, waiting for a indication to move.
She looked up at a clock on the face of a nearby building. "Myy chariot for the border leaves in an hour. Please Shining, let me get it alone. I...didn't like doing that. But I had to. Think about what I said. And...try to find another mare. A good mare! If you have some whoring floozy when I come back in April...hehehe. Shining?" He finally looked up to her. "You'll be okay without me. I need to go now. Goodbye."
Chrysalis walked away, leaving him standing in the middle of the park, head down with heartache.

This occurs eight months before Princess Luna's return, and three and a half years before Changeling in my Home.
Edit: I'm sorry, I can't count. I said five months before, no, I meant eight. I have reasons for these numbers.

I gather, in the universe of this story, that Chrysalis never attacked Canterlot?
3095205 This is an Alternate Universe where she does not attack Canterlot, but even then, this scene occurs before Princess Luna's return. Don't worry, Shining does marry the Sovereign of love on April 21st after Luna's return, so all of Cantelot has some excitment to look forward to.

Oh for Gods sake! I thought it happened after events of that story. You killed every intrigue it has.
