So, I just graduated from College today! · 3:28am May 17th, 2015
This beautiful selfie pretty much sums up what my day has been like. There was a lot of joy, crying, pride, and so many goodbyes to so many wonderful friends and people. But I finally have a BA in Theatre and TV-Video Production, along with graduating Cum Laude; which is pretty awesome. Now, begins the time where I must find a job and become independent in order to start building an acting career.
This also means that I shall, of course, be returning to fanfiction (For real this time; school is no longer a major factor for my stress). But expect me to be a little more active now that education is out of the way and I no longer have to worry about books, studying, assignments, or balancing my time between all this and work/socialization.
But Yay! I did it! I can't remember the last time I felt this happy!
Congrats!
Any advice for someone going to college in a year or two?
3075601 I can think of a few:
1. Don't get too drawn to one school when searching. It is best to keep a very strong open mind about all of your options and think of the pros and cons of what each school has to offer. And when it comes time to choose one in the end, the decision will be much easier.
2. When choosing a major, don't think about what career options they have, but what those skills you learn from it can teach you. A lot of jobs these days are more focused on skill than what actual degree you end up earning. Just be sure to list them wisely on your resume.
3. Do what you love in school. Find a club, acedemic area, or even a group of like-minded people to be around. If you make all four of your years about studying, then you'll be miserable. This really is the best place to make amazing friends; never let it slip. And this is also a great place to really do what you enjoy doing through either a major, minor, or even extra-curricular.
4. Don't be afraid to try new expereinces. Take a class in something fun and interesting like voice lessons or intro to acting, or anything else you'd be interested in trying out. I first tried out Zumba while in school, and came to really enjoy it as a workout. And I also wish I was able to do more like take a dance class, or use the pool more often to go swimming whenever I needed to clear my mind. But the bottom lin eis never box yourself to the repetitive things you know, or you will be bored and miserable.
5. Get a job. By this I mean a part-time, non-soul consuming job. Chances are, you'l either be helping your family pay the bills, or paying on your own. Not only will getting a job to do between studying help you earn some more much needed money, but you'll also pick up a lot of valuable career skills and develop a very strong ethic of work and working around time commitments. Though I must say that if you really, really need the money, maybe look into getting two jobs only if you can manage them and have the energy to do multiple things all at once.
6. Make friends with your professors. I knwo it may sound weird now to develop close friendships with your teachers, who are more than likely much older than you, but it may even just happen on it's own. These are the people who want you to go on and succeed in what you do, and so it would be pretty obvious that they would share your own passions. You'll love taking there classes and spending time with them outside it, all while getting the best education possible. They'll also come very much in handy when you need to look for jobs, need references, or other worldly advice pertaining to your life or career goals. Though you still have to respect them like professors in the classroom, you'll be surprised of the great things that can happen when you befriend those grading your term papers.
7. Have fun. College is meant to be a joyful experience. I only wish I knew about this much earlier, and it could have spared me so much drama and stress. If something isn't working out, start by talking it over with friends or seeing a school therapist who will always be willing to help you through hard times. If you don't enjoy the four years away from home, then how can you expect the rest of your life like that as well? So justy habg loose and embrace the time you have; because in the end, you'll only get so much of it to really cherish.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
