I wrote a blog post. · 11:52pm Mar 12th, 2015
I've gone too long without making any blog posts. I've intended to, but I have a tendency to hold myself to high standards with stuff I make. Usually, that works well. My desire to make my work better gives me the patience to actually do so. In some cases, however, I don't think it's appropriate. In a blog, for instance. If I try to make each post into an A+ essay, well, I'll be able to, but it will be really slow. I won't be able to share much information about what the deal is with whatever I'm writing.
And "whatever I'm writing" happens to be "Apple of Discord" right now, my first story on this site. It's about Applejack getting all of Discord's powers. Interestingly, it seems that's been done before, and recently, too, in the form of "Applejack of All Trades" by TundraStanza. There may well be others, as well, but there you go. Obviously, every story with this premise will be completely different. It's chaos magic!
I chose Applejack for a few reasons. Now, this is a dangerous subject for me, because I find it to be rather interesting, which puts me in essay mode, so I'll make an effort to be brief. One factor was that I wanted to get to know the character better, and I figured writing about her would be a good way to do that. It's working well so far, though it's possible that a Slice of Life would have been a better choice for that purpose. More importantly, though, she's really the only one of the Main 7 whose story would go how I'm planning. Each pony's experience with Discordian magic would be immensely different. Applejack is the most stable and the most safety-conscious. Beyond that, my lips are sealed.
I found the response to the prologue interesting. My writing of Discord was complimented, which pleased me, because he is my favorite character and I love to write him. Unfortunately, he's about to disappear for a few chapters. He'll be back, though!
And those chapters are another thing. See, the prologue was pretty action-packed because it picked up in the middle of an episode. But now I've used that conflict for its potential as a plot device to set a new story in motion, one I have to start from scratch. That means I need to write a few chapters of run-up before the real action starts. Chapter 1 is 6,994 words long so far (I think it's starting to move towards its conclusion), and don't get me wrong, it's fun and has plenty of chaos magic shenanigans, but I can't suppress the feeling that it will be a bit of a disappointment after the prologue, especially since it was so well-received. But I try not to let myself worry too much about that. I mean, this is Fimfiction. You people love scenes about the Cutie Mark Crusaders flooding Sweet Apple Acres with strawberry milkshake, right? That's the kind of stuff that's been happening in those 6,994 words. It makes sense in context. No, wait. This is a story about chaos magic. Nothing makes sense in the context of chaos magic.
I think that's all I wanted to write for now. So, whoopee! I wrote it!
P.S. I came up with funny names for 5 out of the Main 7 with Discord powers. There's Rainbow Dashcord, Disparity, Applejack of Discord, Entropinkie Pie, and Dispike. I can't think of clever ones for Twilight or Fluttershy, though.
