New project, day 'who counts these anymore': A new character has appeared. · 6:31pm Mar 5th, 2015
As I was saying on my last blogpost, I'm working on the task of building a Shared Universe. Although The Doom Patrol and Mare-Do-Well Strikes! are supposed to be the focal points (analogue to Action and Detective Comics, if you will) I also want to give way to more concepts and characters than those two stories.
Since this is a long run project, the best way to cut it down is to reduce the idea as a whole into it's minimal components. In simpler, and more poetic words; I'll take the one kilometer walk, one step at a time. That means one-shots.
The first one of these on-shots is Atomic Knight, the Hero of Tomorrow. The concept behind this is to advert placing every major story in Ponyville, by giving Canterlot its own super-hero. It also goes with the presentation of the magi-tech world that I want to use, by introducing a Equestria that's between the atomic/space era (60's-70's) and the first steps of the digital one (80's-90's)
But what would be a a story without a good character? Here's our protagonist, ladies and gentlemen:
Now, instead of showing off Blueblood's character (that's what the actual fic is for), I'll draw an influence map, highlighting the common aspects from other (relatively) well known characters.
1.- Pablo Picasso's full name.
It entertains me how long can be a name if there's enough titles and/or family lines involved. In Pablo's case, it was his parents way to show off their nobility, so I'll adapt the artist's name to an Equestrian equivalent. And hold on, because I'm going to type Picasso's full name without googling it: *deep breath*
Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y PicassoAnd now, Blueblood's version: *another deep breath*
Vladimir Duke Joseph Franc de Pansy Jan Nepomucký Faust of Remedies Escriba of the Holy Pony Sisters Rex and Blueblood
*faints*2.- Booster Gold's personality.
The point I want to make with Blueblood is that he's not really the jerk he seemed to be in The Best Night Ever. I'm a follower of the theory that Blueblood assumed Rarity was a gold digger, so he decided to make good use of the familiar tradition of trolling.
So, for this story's purpose, Blueblood will be like a non-time traveler Booster. In other words, he becomes a superhero for the fame and notoriety, but accidentally becomes a real one in the process.3.- The Web's backstory
In the brief, and sadly forgotten time when DC held the rights of the Archie Comics super-heroes (a little before the New 52) they made a big deal out of it. And what better way to present their new acquisitions than with four issues written by the (then) top writer J.M. Straczynski.
In the case of the Web, he's basically Batman/Green Arrow without the tragic origin story. John Raymond is a young and successful businessman, who always looks like a cold bastard in comparison to his social conscious brother, David. Marked by his father disapproval ("You're a good businessman, John. But David... is a better man"). Decided to prove himself to be a good man, John spends a sh*tton of money to become the hero he never was before.
I think that this origin story could work with Blueblood on various levels. As Celestia's nephew, he should live up to it. But in comparison to Cadance (Celestia's niece) and Twilight (Celestia's student), he's the bad one, or at least the lesser one.4.- Aquaman's fame
If there's a constant I've seen on this site, is that Prince Blueblood is the butt of every noble's joke ever made. In fact, I'm pretty sure that Blueblood is the entire fandom's butt monkey. Also, in a similar way to the King of the seas, I would like to establish that he's actually a 'crouching moron, hidden BADASS!'
So, there are the pieces. Time to assemble them into a story now.
