Demons: a more detailed explanation · 10:13pm Feb 19th, 2015

Before the dawn of time, most of the gods grew jealous of the power of one. That one is called the Sundered Goddess by modern mortals. So, they killed the SG, tore her to pieces, and used her Heart to hold up the mortal plane. The pieces became twenty-four independent gods of varying morality. The last breath she breathed into the mortal plane as she died became the magic used by mortals in modern times.

From the ocean of blood spilled from her body, the demons rise. They are lingering manifestations of her rage and pain. All of them seek to restore their ‘mother’ by any means necessary. Some of them attack the gods in an endless war on the Ethereal Plane. Some of them attack the mortal plane with the goal of taking back her Heart.

There are 108 demon legions. Each legion has 108 races of demons in it. In total, there are 11,664 types of demons. Some demons are virtually unique, and others are simply one of many. There are 108 demon leaders, unique demons that rule over one of the legions.

The war will never end until the Sundered Goddess’s Heir steps in and takes control of her powers. With a new ruler, the demons will stop spawning without her permission. The Heir will gather the 24 and merge with them. Then, the Heir will take back the Heart, destroy the universe, and make a new universe, one that is not born of murder.

Everypony Hates Hades is fully in effect for the Sundered Goddess, the twenty-four gods born from the fragments of her body, and her Demons. (Warning, the link is a TV Tropes link.) Her Heir will face it to some degree. Some of the demons and Fragments deserve a bad reputation, but not necessarily to the extreme degree that they face.

Tirek, currently imprisoned in Tartarus. His goal was the same as Ungoliant -- to reclaim all the magic and return it to the Sundered Goddess -- but he lost himself in madness. He had no idea that Twilight was the Sundered Goddess reborn. There are other 'centaur' demons, just very few. They are a rare type.

Scorpan, turned ‘good’ (from a starting point of blue/orange morality) when he learned of Harmony’s plan to resurrect the SG. Was unable to convince his brother that Harmony’s method was better. There are other demons like him. He and Tirek are 'brothers' in several ways, but demons are not typically born through mortal ways and thus do not have typical genetics.

Yamata no Orochi: Demon Lord and ruler of one of the legions. Currently imprisoned in the Abyss. Feared by most demons and gods alike for his power, ruthlessness, planning, and the fact that his death would actually cause a greater disaster than what he gets up to when he is alive.

Changelings: Children of the Goddess of Love and Spider Goddess Ungoliant the Devourer, they are half demonic in nature. Ungoliant ate an entire legion of demons and the legion remained imprisoned in her belly. When Ungoliant and Love were mating, one of the demon races saw their chance and sent their spirits into the offspring born of the union. All changelings carry demonic magic. The queens are the only ones aware of the demonic souls they posses. Their appetite for love is their efforts to keep their demon halves from manifesting.

Kitsune: the nine-tailed foxes believe themselves to be reformed demons. They melded with mortal foxes because they are more interested in playing with mortals than killing them. They are fully aware of their demonic heritage and do not worry about it, as they consider it simply a fact of their lives. The demon half is largely in control, with the mortal half modifying their perception of the world into something that results in morality that can match up with other mortals.

Unicorns: a race of demons that were swayed by Harmony into melding their demonic souls with some ponies. Their desire to see the Sundered Goddess reborn was what made them agree to it. Now, their numbers grow as more unicorns are born. Modern unicorns do not recall their origins. Sombra's curved horn and freaky magic is what happens when a unicorn summons their demonic power. Hatred and fear are simply easy ways for them to access their demon magic.

3781927 A brief rundown on the types of magic:

Magic: The last breath of the Sundered Goddess, in the form known as Mana, locked away from easy access by the other gods by being connected to Essence, a resource created by souls, which gods do not have (in the strictest technical sense, gods are composed entirely of something beyond souls. Like super souls, but not quite).
- Dark magic refers to magic that consumes the user. The closer one gets to the Heart of the Goddess, the more powerful the magic that can be wielded. Mortals are too weak to fully master the wild power of the Goddess, resulting in insanity and having their souls eaten if they try to master Her power. Basically, dark magic is what happens when a mortal dives into the deep end of Her gift and begins drowning.

Miracles: Divine entities, Gods, Demi-Gods, Quasideities, and Angels -- are all able to warp reality to some degree. Mortals who are sufficiently devout may be given some divine power to carry out miracles in the name of their patron gods. Any divine force can do miracles inherently.

Demon Magic: Demons are technically a type of angel, simply angels that serve a dead goddess. As they are born from the blood of the SG, they have both Mana based magic and Divine magic. They alone understand both sides of the spectrum well enough to blend the two forces together. Sombra's magic, and the magic Twilight used were not demon magic, but were close.

--- you know what? I've been sitting on a story that is basically in readable form, is complete, and further fleshes out the setting. It isn't a very good story, but I might as well publish it.
