Thoughts on Pony Families · 10:47pm Jan 12th, 2015
The subject of Pony genetics isn't new, as I've found several videos and blogs discussing it. However, one thing about the concept that I found interesting that wasn't really brought up, was the apparent “either or” style for the three pony types that was obviously done to simplify the universe for its younger viewers.
The best example for this, came from Carrot Cake when he explains in “Baby Cakes” about how it is possible for ponies to have offspring with other types of ponies. Following this, in a YouTube video done by “Digibro,” he shares his thoughts how it also makes sense about how ponies tend to look for partners of the same type (doesn't always happen, but common for traditional reasons). However, this got me thinking about the overall appearance of the offspring. By this, I mean that every pony in the show has solid characteristics of one race, yet their heritage may be completely different and you would never be able to tell by just looking at them.
For example, referring back to “Baby Cakes,” according to Carrot Cake, both he and Cup Cake each have 1 ancestor (mentioned) of either a Unicorn or Pegasus and it is assumed that most of their family history consists of primarily Earth Ponies…yet their foals, Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake, both look like a full blooded Unicorn and Pegasus.
Despite this, it’s probably a good thing that the physics of Equestria are so simple. It means that every pony born there will only have 1 type instead of a mixture of two…which would make things very awkward in the long run for the universe. For one, there would be a bunch of baby Alicorns running around and would also probably be some strange mixes like Unicorns with weaker magic or Pegasus that are physically strong, but bad at flying (no offense to Bulk Biceps, but you get the point). Overall, it would probably complicate things and encourage tradition…but those are just my thoughts on the matter.
So, genes are apparently hereditary. Who'd a thunk it?
I prefer the idea that their tribe would be tied in with their cutie mark or social surroundings. Not because it makes sense, but because it's more... interesting, I guess. Less bogged down by that pesky thing we call 'reality'.

I do agree with that idea and it is much more interesting. to think about. However, I also think that their cutie marks and social surroundings could also be tied and are influenced by their names. Often times, a pony's name gives us a hint towards what their special talents and cutie marks represent. And yes, it is less restrained...but then again, reality is much less practical in Equestria, isn't it?
