More notes on anthros (and the setting)

Let me start off by saying the next chapter of Son of Man, Daughter of Pony is in the works, it's likely going to be one of the shorter chapters (I'm not even completely sure if it'll get past 1k in word count, but we'll see), though it is just meant to be a little bridging chapter between Melody's first two classes.

    Notes on rewrite

As I mentioned back in September, I'm planning on rewriting the prologue section of Mage's Jump, I've decided that, instead of waiting till chapter 20 (which, given my my current update schedule, will be a long ways off... on the plus side the next couple chapters are a bit less focused on the main plot, one is a flashback and the other is to start what I hope/plan to be a minor subplot) I'm

More notes on anthros (and the setting) · 6:04am Jan 8th, 2015

Let me start off by saying the next chapter of Son of Man, Daughter of Pony is in the works, it's likely going to be one of the shorter chapters (I'm not even completely sure if it'll get past 1k in word count, but we'll see), though it is just meant to be a little bridging chapter between Melody's first two classes.

That being said, I thought I'd share a bit of minor info that isn't likely to be brought up in the story anytime soon, mainly some information on the naming habits of anthros and some bits of the city the story takes place in (the former I've had on my mind for a while now, the latter I pretty much just now got some thoughts on).

This is partly inspired by one of my prereaders/editors commenting that it seemed like Melody wasn't fond of her last name, this is not the case, a better answer would be she personally finds to be easier to have people address her by the last part of her given name (Sharpe). This is actually a pretty common habit with anthros, even more so with those in Equestria, to the point most only ever include it on paperwork that requires their full names, since, on a subconscious level, it actually feels a bit odd to be addressed by their last names, even if they have nothing wrong with it (Melody is actually quite proud of her mother's side of the family, she's just used to be refereed to by her given name without the "González" part, since it also somewhat common for people to refer to them as such most of the time).

As for why the bit is there in the first place, the usual custom is, this is generally only done if the pony parent lacks a "family name" (Lulamoon, for example), then the surname of the anthro child will be the same as the human parent's. This also applies if the pony parent is of the gender where it is common for them to take their spouse's last name once they are married (male in Equestria, female on Earth).

Not really much else to add off the top of my head (though feel free to ask any questions you may have in the comments below), on to the city:

Los Puerta <name subject to change, couldn't really think of a good name at the moment>: A fictional city in Northern California, formed in the late 1969 by both humans and ponies following the opening of the portals between the two worlds. Los Puerta is famous for being the location of the first public portal station (portals had been open and stable since 1967, but was limited to researchers and diplomats), opened in 1972. Despite its relatively young age, the city has grown to an incredible size thanks to trade and immigration between Earth and Equestria, with it's second most notable feature being Aurora Academy, founded in 1999 by Miss Aurora Star, a young noble from Canterlot who decided to use the fortune to provide the many human, pony, griffon, and later anthro youths of the city with a decent college education. Today, the city's population is roughly 2 million, with close to 3 thousand students (more or less half of which live off campus) a year.

Again, I basically just came up with the info on the city on the spot

Neat information, so if it was say a human male married to a mare in equestria. He would take on the surname of his spouse? Say like if his name was Alex and his wife's name was Gleaming Emerald. His name would end up Alex Emerald? o3o

Oh and how do they determine the first name of the hybrid? Also are there any rare cases where they have regular siblings who aren't hybrids like end up full human or full pony? do something the parents name the non hybrids the opposite of their race say like a pony mother naming their son a pony name? I like to see world and social building in good fics :3

regarding the name- Generally yes, much like on Earth they can opt to keep their maiden names, but most of the time they'll either take their spouse's surname or, at the very least add it after their own with a hyphen.

As for non-hybrid offspring... I hadn't actually thought about that before.

I'm going to say it might be possible, but there has yet to be a recorded case of it happening, though did have as thought once if that would be the case with anthro's having children (Anthro+human= fully human child, Anthro+pony/Griffon= fully pony/griffon child <or hippogriff, if the anthro is a pony mating with a griffon, or vice versa>)

2708967 Thanks for answering :D , also keep up the good work ^-^
